Happs trackball tracking weird on deceleration?
« on: February 04, 2005, 10:14:27 am »
Hello.

I recently connected a Happs 3" trackball to an OptiPAC using the instructions on the ultimarc.com site. I'm seeing strange tracking when using the trackball, though.

Basically, what happens is that as the ball accelerates, the cursor begins to push to an axis perpendicular to the direction im spinning. For example: i'm spinning the ball vertically, and the cursor (in windows) moves vertically. But when the ball starts to decelerate, the cursor begins moving to the left or right. Same thing happens horizontally: as the ball decelerates, the cursor starts to move vertically.

I'm not sure where the problem may lie. Is there any type of configuration that has to be done for the OptiPAC to track properly? Again, it only happens when the ball is decelerating. If i'm whaling on the ball, it seems to track properly.

Thanks in advance.

-Greg

I got an Oscar spinner recently and found that when my analog joystick is plugged in at the same time Mame does weird things.  E.g. the direction on screen is sometimes reversed and my location on screen playing breakout or Arkanoid will all of a sudden change.  So, if you have other controls plugged in you may want to try removing them.

Go into the analog controls option in Mame (tab key then analog controls is the default) and see what the sensitivity is set to.  Setting it too high or low may cause problems.  Do you have reverse turned on or off?  What about speed?

Thanks for the information Jody. Actually, though, it exhibits the problem outside of MAME. Using the trackball as a mouse replacement in Windows exhibits the same behavior.

Is it just a little bit of drift? or a half screen kinda drift.

If it's just a little, thats normal, it's nearly impossible to move just one axis of the trackball at a time.
