How close are J-stiks to other Sanwas?

First I need to clarify if I'll be able to mount a J-stik in 3/4" MDF (bottom mounted) as I would any other Happ joystick. I might route it a 1/4" to make it higher but that's it I think.

Second why do some people use octagonal plates for their sanwas?

Anyway heres a regular Sanwa like on Tekken 5 I believe

I cannot answer the second part, but mounting it on the underside works fine, although you will need to route it out as you've said. The feel isn't too heavy, so if the feel of a new Sanwa is the same as the well-used examples nearby then you'll be happy.

The octagonal gates allow you to feel all of the directions, making circular movements and dragon punch type movements alot easier than on square ones. So if your serious about your 2D fighting games they're very usefull.

Spiffyshoes will probably be able to give you more info, that guy seems to be a walking encyclopedia when it comes to japanese controls, he helped me loads, and he usually reads any threads with the word "Sanwa" in it .

My J-Stiks are mounted under 5/8" (15mm) MDF atm, with no routing.  They feel much too short for me, when I make my final panel I'm probably going to use a metal mounting plate.  Alternatively I'd route the MDF down to ~5mm.

Edit: on the restrictor subject, I presume the octagonal ones would make a J-Stik lose it's 4/8-way switchability.  Just a thought if you want to play 4-way games too.

The official word from Andy from ultimarc is that the thickest the wood should be for mounting the J-Stick is 3/8" which is the same for the Sanwa JLF-TP-8Y joysticks.

I have a pair of j-sticks mounted under 5/8" pine and I think they feel great.  They aren't nearly as long as the Happ Supers I replaced, but with the short throw of the j-sticks, I haven't had any problems at all.

I just find them a little too low.  Not bad as such, I just think they would feel better for me a bit higher.  I'm hoping to raise mine 10mm or so.
