Acrylic sheet Australia
« on: January 28, 2005, 06:32:52 pm »
I went to Bunnings warehouse and I found a sheet of 3mm 1200x900 acrylic but it's too thin. I am needing a thicker one maybe around 5-6mm. Anyone know somewhere in Melbourne that sells this stuff? That sheet at Bunnings was $70 which is a bit expensive.

Thanks.

Bunning are selling the same stuff in Sydney and also told me they could order it thicker from the Aussie manufacturer on special order.

Blackwood (AE Baker - Australia wide) sell Lexan but it is expensive.
Dotmar are a Sydney based company and their pricing is better, service average.
Engineering & Export deal in plastics and can get you Lexan, service is excellent.

Road freight is pretty cheap from all of the above.

What about safety glass?

Good luck.  :)

I got a price for safety glass for $235 a sheet and $265 a sheet for laminated glass. TOO expensive for me. I think I'd prefer plastic anyway.

yes, but you dont want regular glass in there, too easy to shatter. acrylic is also known as plexi glass, maybe that could help...

You can also search for Lexan...like plexi, but usually considered better, in that it is easier to work with, less tendency to break and crack when cutting/drilling.

$235??? How big was this thing? 10 meters wide?

I just got quoted $110 for an 800x600 6mm thick chemically hardened and grey ("smoked") piece, including 50mm rounded corners and polished top for a table-top.  That was from a local glass place near me that does a whole bunch of window and desk top stuff en masse.

I think you need to shop around.  Find your local warehouse/industrial district, and go for a drive to see what other places are there.  Thats what I did, and ended up saving almost $500 on parts including metal work, glass, and laminate printing.  Best of all, all of the places I'm dealing with are in the same street!

Non-specialty stores like Bunnings and co are always going to charge a markup if it's not their primary business.

Couldn't agree more.

Quick story, I needed a 50x50mm SHS fence post. Because I was going to bunnings anyway to get some other stuff, I had a quick look at how much they wanted for the Steel...$50!!!

I then went to a steel place literally five minutes away (I carried the post home) and picked up the same thing
for $12!

I found Bunning super competitive on tools especially the big stuff like circular saws and routers.

It's pretty common for most companies who buy in non-standard product to double the cost. If they don't it's not worth their effort.

I will be honest, $235 doesn

No, it's about the size that fits an average cocktail cabinet.

Yes.  That was me being sarcasting by saying you are paying too much for a simple sheet of glass.  (Just in case it needs to be spelled out some more). :)
