Lik-sang PC virtual gun
« on: January 28, 2005, 11:42:50 am »
Does anyone have one of these?

Does anyone have one of these configured and working correctly in MAME under Win XP?

What are your general thoughts/opinions on this gun?

Is it an OK substitute while we all wait for ACT labs to come out with a replacement PC gun?

Thanks for your time!
Steve

I think there's a review of it at www.retroblast.com

Hi MinWah!  yes, I read that review...that's what made me think I'd better get some "real world" opinions before I try to purchase one.  If it's no good then - grrr - I guess I'll wait for ACT to get it together.

Or for that other gun you were looking up (erealgames.com) to come out for PC.

Thanks!

Yeah that one sounds interesting...and looks a bit beefier than most.

I was not terribly impressed with the original Act Labs, maybe I was being too picky.  I just didn't like the occasional 'off shots' it seemed to do.  Not a biggie until you play something like Point Blank and the off-shot occurs when you have one shot at the fly ;)

Well here is my experience with the Virtual Gun.  I know some will disagree but you did ask for real world experience.  The gun worked fine for HOTD2 on a crt monitor in XP Pro. some shot were off.  It did not work well in Mame.  and it also did not work on a arcade monitor.  I dumped it on Ebay because I needed it for a arcade monitor.  I say wait . I also I heard that the Virtual gun was being discontinued.

I'm starting to think that I'm the only one who has Act-Lab guns that shoot well.
I haven't hooked them up TOGETHER yet, but I've had each one hooked up separately.
From my experience, they couldn't GET any better accuracy-wise.
I think they could be better appearance-wise, but mine both shoot EXACTLY where I aim--EVERY time.

I bought the PC Auto Mag Light Gun a while back.  Others had reported that while not so good for MAME, they worked ok for the games that came bundled with it.  Not for me, it didn't.   Total waste of $$

Seems like everybody gets different results with all of the different guns out there- I wonder if it's the guns, or the monitor that makes results vary so much??

This gun is only not accurate, it's inconsistent in it's inaccuracy.  If it was a little off to the left or right I could compensate but there is no rhyme or reason to where this gun shoots.  I was pretty good at duck hunt but I could barely hit a single duck using this gun, police trainer was equally as frustrating.  Also I could only get them to work at 640x480 with my setup, but that just might be me.  I ended up cutting my losses and selling them to a co-worker after I warned him that they are not very good.

Lucky you ;)

I found that if I continuously shot at the same spot, I would get an occasional off-shot.  Not just a bit off, like half a screen off :(

I bought a Virtual Gun in mid-03 for my 1st MAME cabinet running these specs:
AMD 1.6 GHz
512 MB ram
Onboard video
MAME v.79 (I think)
Nebula

My thoughts? The gun is ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---......

Here are some things I noticed about it....

Pros:
Cheap (cost)
Light weight (Lighter than a PS2 "dualshock" controller)
Good looking
3 different reloads (Hammer, Pedal, Side button)

Cons:
Cheap feel (Very thin/light and "creaky" when you grip it)
Trigger not very solid when squeezed
Very poor accuracy (Holding it up to the screen, the gun would fire somewhere within a 3" diameter of where it was pressed against the glass)
Very noticable white flash when playing HOtD
Signature tags are dumb.
