As this community is heavily populated with Americans, I have a serious question that perhaps somebody might answer.

Why does your country love Oprah Winfrey so much, why does everybody suck up to her and why is she so bloody popular?

This is outa character for me to dislike anybody as much as her.

I think it's out of character for anyone to dislike Oprah as much as you do.  She's one of those people that seem really easy to just not care about.

To her credit though, not that I like her either, she did bust her --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- and make something out of herself, which is more than I can say for a lot of people, myself included.

She grew up poor, and was moved from relative to relative. She was raped by a cousin when she was nine years old and later molested by a male friend of her mother's and by an uncle. She became pregnant and gave birth to a stillborn baby boy when she was fourteen. Oprah's father helped her turn her life around. Oprah has spoke of his requirement that she read a book each week and complete a book report on the book. At the age of nineteen, Oprah landed her first job as a reporter for a radio station in Nashville. The rest is history as she is now one of the richest women in the world. (From her bio)

Day-time super-celebrities are a strange breed. Most even have their own magazines. I don't think they are liked, so much as worshipped. Oprah has developed a larger following than any other and her brainless viewers sit idle in front of their televisions waiting for Oprah to appear and dispense her commands of the day.

I believe her name is a misspelling of the biblical name Ophrah.

And like you I have no idea why anyone cares.  Although she was pretty good in The Color Purple.

I dont know anyone who actually likes her or who will at least admit to liking her. And how conceded do you have to be to put yourself on the cover of your own magazine every month. (I don't mean most of the time its every single friggin issue.)

I didn't like Oprah until I saw her "Oprahs favorite things" episode and she gave everyone in the audience plasma tvs, Ipods, DVD camcorders, Sony Vaio Laptops, Neptune washer and dryers and tons more. I have been a fan of hers since.

She gave tons of stuff to prenant wives of soldiers in Iraq. She gave about 4 houses away one episode to people who were needy. She gave those Pontiac G6s to school teachers and paid for their taxes and licencing. She gave about 10 millions dollars to an African community so they could rebuild. She gave..... She gave... She gave...

I don't see anything wrong with her anymore. I just wish I could be as generous as her if I had the money. There are many, many millionaires/ billiobaires that aren't so giving.

My wife USED to like Oprah,

Not that I had anything to do with her change of mind 

Her audience is filled with people who ask her for stuff, the "1" episode I watched a lady asked her for the clothes off her back. No, I'm serious she asked Oprah for the outfit she was currently wearing. 

Most of the stuff she hands out (like the cars) is all donated or a writeoff. I bet she made way more that 10 million dollars last year in interest.

I think Oprah causes a lot of problems for men.  Women watch it and then start think their men are doing the same things as the asses on the show.

But she is a shining example of what is possible.

Good, I am not entirely alone, the world is starting to make sense again.

and now she is worshiped by Pontiac ( and that means deals for her and her business with them and their affiliates ) , that's worth as much to her as if she got a tax write off for the donation ( something Pontiac did get ).
She got to where she is because she is a very good business woman , giving away those cars was a busness move , just how meny more viewers you think that stunt got her , how much more are people talking about her , how much more can she now charge the advertisers to run commercials during her ( yes she owns it ) show.
