Best choices for 4 ways?
« on: January 24, 2005, 10:31:29 am »
What choices do I have for 4 ways that only LET the stick move in 4 directions?  I bought the x-arcade special.  I know alot of people don't like them, but they are good enough for what I need them for.  They are 4/8 ways.  But when set for 4 way, the actuator is just smaller, still allowing "circular" movement.  What joysticks, actually only allow that 4 way movement in 4 way mode?

Thanks!

Steve

alot of people like the ms pac\galaga style joysticks

I like the t-stick plus, which is a 4\8 way switchable.

You could try something like these they are fairly inexpensive and have restrictor plates to determine mode 2 way / 4 way / 8 way

T-Sticks are a good way to go, but you might need to get used to the throw.

Also, the E-stick and J-stick use a 4-way restrictor as does the original WICO 4-way.

As far as I know, the old Wico 4-ways have a "diamond" shape opening, so you won't feel a "circle". I'm not sure if any Happ joys are like this.
NO MORE!!

Off the shelf the ms pacman galaga joystick have the diamond shape restrictor plate, these are available from happ. Betson has a Qix stick that is similar to the ms pacman stick but has a longer handle. Final option is a real wico 4-way joystick.

My personal favorite for a DEDICATED 4-way is a Wico leaf.

For a swappable 4/8-way, that you can get to the bottom of the stick to change, I'd go with the J-stiks.

If you HAVE to swap from the top, I'd get the T-stiks.

NOTE: I do have an untested theory that you can use a vehicle choke cable, lawnmower throttle cable, or vehicle heat adjustment cable to MAKE the J-stiks swappable from outside the cabinet.
I just haven't had any reason to test my theory because I have modular controls, and can actually swap STICKS to go from 4-8 way.

PEALE, if your listening...this is another one of those items that should be placed in the FAQ sticky post. this 4-way queston has been asked 1,000 times. Maybe you can find the best thread and ass it to that?

just a suggestion.

Mebbe Peale will, but mebbe not after my reply.

I can't believe I missed this, it was so obvious, it was just SITTING there right in front of my face!

As I read the title, it hit me.

Best choices for 4 ways?  There's only 1, and it happens to be THE best choice.
