Primer for MDF?
« on: January 18, 2005, 12:23:21 pm »
Hello,

Did a search on painting and someone mentioned they used Killz for primer on MDF. This is what I was planning on using as well - just wanted to see if anyone else had opinions on this before I actually started painting.

thanks!

I think thats what I used for my cab.  Worked good.  Don't skimp when putting it on either.

I used Kilz as well and it worked great.  I used the OIL based Kilz because I had read on here that you should not use waterbased primer (wood soaks up the water).  Don't know much about it, but seemed to make sense so I went with the oil based.  It dries fast too (in nice weather) it dried in like an hour or so.

Good luck!

Hmm. Well that brings up another question. The Killz I have is not oil based.

Anyone use the latex stuff and have good results?

I just finished painting my cab with latex primer (killz) and paint.  No problems.  I even painted the edge where the T-molding goes...

Ya, I just used latex as well. I had it left over from redoing a room in the house.

My now ex wife in all her brilliance decided at an early age to paint my now teenage son's room in multiple primary colors, one wall green, one yellow, one red, one blue.

It took me about 4 coats of kilz to get that covered so we could repaint...

My advice....don't let this happen to you. :)

Cool, good to know. I have leftover latex Killz from painting some furniture. Good to know it should work okay.

thanks!

Good that you are priming.  I don't remember what I primed my cab with.  You can see pics on my site.  I primed everything.  I didn't want humidity changes to affect the cabinet too much.
