Putting sound through TV speakers?
« on: January 17, 2005, 03:11:34 pm »
Just for fun, before installing the speakers in my cab,  I thought I'd hook up the soundcard from my computer to the "sound in" jacks on my TV - you know the red and white RCA jacks?  It works great...the sound is pretty good, loud enough and everything.  Wondering why Saint didn't suggest that in the book?

You actually don't need RCA either.  You can connect it if the sound card produces the right output.

If you know the impedance (indicated in Ohms) and match that with an amp then it should work too.

Though, just spending some $40 on a sound card with RCA output as you mentioned is much easier and cleaner looking.

My 1st cab - not exactly a cabinet, http://www.carnine.net/mame relies on an external TV exclusively for sound and video.  It of course can also be hooked up to the audio-in on the receiver for rediculous simulated-4-speaker surround.

Hey NICE job!  You should post your project over in the 'Project Announcements' thread if you haven't already.  Either you finished your project  several months ago or you celebrate Christmas year-round?   ;)  Nice website too.

Well done.  You can tell when a project has been planned out and someone has taken time to do a good job.  Pat yourself on the back!

THANKS!!!    and yes, its always Christmas in a house full of games.  I finished it last fall 2004, but just put it in the project announcements on this site about two weeks ago. I made another one  (finished spring 2005) at http://www.carnine.net/arcade (needs bezel work) and added it along with the other at the same time.  I am currently looking for a driving model to focus on flight sims and driving games.

GAMEOVER: Nice cab, the custom marquee, bezel and panel look clean, cool and unique.

The speakers add such a nice touch to cabs.

A bezel with tiny holes in the bottom or sides for the speakers would be cool. All you would need is a very small drill bit i guess.

Small enough so people cant see through the holes that is....

attenuation circuits work great for jamma to tv sound. I know thats not really used around here with mame being the main draw...

...but it's nice for real arcade to tv setups.
