ATI vid cards display full screen?
« on: October 15, 2002, 05:42:06 pm »
OK, I have decided to use a tv for my cab. However, since my intended pc only has a pci slot, I had to use a geforce mx420 verto. I find out that when I use this it gives me a screen that is centered to the bottom right, giving me about a 1 inch border on the left side/top.

I know tvtool is supposed to be capable of correcting this but it doesn't WORK with this particular card (lucky me, it's like the only unsupported card).

Thus, I will probably just build my own comp with an agp slot and get a good radeon.

THE POINT:

I want to make sure before I do this that radeon cards display, using an s-video out, at full screen with no configuration. Is this true?

Oh, and out of sheer curiosity does anyone know if the geforce 4 series of cards using vivo gives a better quality display than the radeons?

Thanks to byoac forums for its help in making my decision on the monitor route, which is in my opinion the most difficult decision about a cab.

I'm almost positive the Radeon 7200 came in a PCI version w/ S-video out.  Be sure to check.

The Radeon's will do full screen on horizontal games, although depending on the games, you may have to enable strecth or set specific resolutions.    Verticles will display black space on either side unless you tinker a lot with them; but in that case the aspect ratio is all wrong.

Before spending a whole lot of money on a compu, see if you can't get away with an older, PCI card that supports S-video out.  They do exist -check eBay.

TV out quality on any Nvidia chipset is based soley on the board manufacturer, and is not a limitation of the Geforce chipset.    I would hazard a guess that the VIVO branded boards offer comparable performance to an ATI card, but again, it soley depends on that boards manufacturer.
