Just tried NBA Jam, ran okay here.  You say there's just the stripe on the top, and the whole thing freezes?  The whole machine?  Or do you just have to hit ESC to exit?

As for Run & Gun, I got the same thing.  There's likely a workaround to get it into game mode, but I don't know what it is.  Let's see what Google says...

Ah...

Thanks Peale,
The whole machine freezes with NBA Jam. I get one line at top when its finished loading and then I need to restart the computer, wont respond to escape.
Do you think maybe I should try an older version of Mame?? I cant think of why it's not working, I have the rom from 3 different sources now and same thing.
Doesnt seem to do it with any other games but I am not far through the very long list.

If your whole machine is freezing it's not a ROM issue.

All the other games work?  What about Mortal Kombat?

Yep, all the other games seem to work, although sometime they take for ever to load and if I push esc to stop the loading the game will start.
Both NBA Jam and NBA jam TE do the same thing (no go), which is strange as they are completely separate.
Mortal combat is fine, got run and gun to go now too, but it is too jerky to play, looking today for a newer setup.
I downloaded mame 0.83 to try instead of 0.89, I guess it cant hurt, may be a little quicker and maybe just a fresh install might help.
Any other ideas though?? I really want to run NBA Jam.

No ideas about NBA Jam, but for the long load times put

skip_validitychecks 1

in your mame.ini file.

I loaded mame 0.83 in place of .89 temporarily and nba jam actually worked, so I have no clue what could be causing the problems. Then reloaded 0.89 and it's gone to crap again.
I'll chuck the mame.ini stuff in.
Thanks for your help.

Try .90, it's the newest version.
