I'm thinking one of THESE would make a killer bartop.

Too cool to hide inside a cab, but I'm tempted to do it anyway. The Mac that powers my cab sorely needs an upgrade.

I got one of these not too long ago for the purpose of bat top

And at $350 it's adequate at 1GhZ For those that aren't into MAC's

I'd probably work, but I'm thinking I could probably piece together a Mini-ATX setup for 1/2 that. If it's going to be in a bartop, I wouldn't need or want a case.

Exactly what I was thinking.
I'm still running a G3/300 B&W in mine.

I was also thinking it would look really nice slid in under a piece of plexi in the middle of the CP, with the drive bay flush to the front of the CP, so you could use the drive.
That would allow you to slide it out, if you wanted to take it somewhere.

Hey, I am thinking of getting one of those mini macs but you can always find cheap G3's on eBay.  How do you think that G3/233 would run the newest OSX (if at all) if it was maxed out in ram?

My girls want a computer and I would love to get a couple cheap macs...maybe even the old iMacs that were colored monitors.

They would want to mostly play mp3's and surf the net.

I don't think the G3s that didn't have onboard USB are supported by OSX.  I could be wrong.

You'd be best off with OS9 on pretty much ANY G3.
They just don't have the horsepower for OSX.

Any G3 desktop you get will have an ATI9200 PCI card as the MAX video card for it.
The Mac Mini comes with that built in, plus has a much better processor, Combo drive, and a lot bigger hard drive.
If you do get an iMac, I'd try to get one of the DV models.
They had a DVD drives, rather than the CD-ROM drives that most of the older ones had.
For the price though it would be hard to beat the Mac Mini with an iMac.

Goz,

What kind of computer is that and where did you get it for $350?  That may be what I'm looking for to work with a project I have.

Thanks in advance.

Goz,

Two other questions..kinda.

1) Can you be more specific on the specs for it?
1GHz, what?
HD size?
Video specs?

2) Does it have an OS with it?

I got the minicase and 1Ghz mini itx mobo as a combo for $249. I purchased a laptop hard drive 40GB for $50.00 from Fry's electronics and paid $50 for a 512MB PC2100 memmory module.

Specs:
Contents: Barebone Mini-ITX system (no HDD or RAM), power adapter, manual, and drivers
I/O connections: PS/2 mouse port, PS/2 keyboard port, VGA connector, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 2 Firewire ports, TV-Out/SPDIF, S-Video, Line Out, Line In, Mic In, RJ-45 port, COM port, and LPT Connector

The CPU is a C3 1Ghz

though it's larger in size (vertically at least) as the new imac (2 inches tall), and it's not released yet. oh, and the price? couldn't find it.

Anyway, I'm a PC user, but this new mac looks sweet. I don't see how any PC could be that size and have comparable specs without heat issues and crashing all the time. Stability anyone?  :o

Oh on final thought, this little sucker makes me think apple should develop a gaming console. it's smaller than say the xbox, which is a 733mhz pc basically.

either that or a kick ass media center.

I'm looking into hanging a couple of usb2 external HDs and a firewire soundcard off one of these for a rock bottom price protools system. Anyone else here thinking along the same lines??

I wouldn't trust the usb ports to support the weight of an external HD.

Could this be hooked up to the PSOne LCD screen?  You could make something pretty small using it as your display.  It might be fun for a vertical mini cab with a joystick and 3 buttons...

I'm not sure which system you're talking about, but the Mac Mini can.
They make a DVI-to-SVid/Composite adapter for it.

Why use a soundcard when you can use firewire only?  You can get those 8-10 mic input things that are firewire starting at around $400. Check musiscians friend.  All you need is the extra hdd space.

you did mean soundcard, right? unless we're talking about the exact same piece of hardware.lol.

My brother is getting ready to do something similar. though he was looking at using a laptop and one of those firewire sound things.

hmm.

btw, wouldn't this be pretty cool with a touchscreen lcd on it and one of those virtual projection keyboards?

But if your building a base to a bartop... you don't care as much about hte look of the case... because you will probably want to put it inside the bartop.  If you like macs though... looks like you now have a great cheap solution.

I personally think they look pretty sweet.  My wife would love one.  But I need my computers to look big, peicemeal and have parts that are new -> 4 years old all in the same box... Otherwise I would get nistalgick (big a!@ sp??)
