removing brand stamp from lumber for staining

For those of you who have done stained cabinets. I have purchased a few wood pieces from Home Depot. The big plywood sheets do not have any marks on them, but the smaller pieces are stamped with the lumber company and type of wood. It looks like some kind of paint or ink stamp. How do you remove this for staining?
I was told that rubbing alchohol and #0 steel wool might take it off, but that does not remove it all. Any suggestions?

sanding it out will work...and will leave you with a nice smooth surface. If you sand it, do the whole board, not just the spot...or it will take the stain differently.

Don't they usually only stamp one side of the board? If thats the case you could use the other side.

Also, if you're using a water based stain / poly, that steel wool may shed fibers in use and potentially rust over time, ruining your finish later on down the road.
Sand the whole board down through progressively finer grits and you'll be good.

Thanks
I was going to bring out the sander anyway, but it looks like it will solve the stamp problem as well.
