Yoke USB Hack Question
« on: January 10, 2005, 01:24:23 pm »
I picked up a Hydra Yoke off ebay and hooked it up to a Sidewinder Dual Strike as per 1up's website.  I have a few problems though and need some help.

I've got it setup as a joystick and it works, but it will not center correctly and the throws are very short.  Appearently the Dual Strike does not provide options for calibrating the joystick.  I tried adjusting VR1,VR2,VR3&VR4 on the Dual Strike board, but that had no affect that I could see.

It seems like alot of people have used this setup.  Does anyone know how to calbrate this thing manually?  Thanks.

Did you calibrate in Control Panel > Game Controllers?

Beware that some people have experienced problems with centering in some games, eg Star Wars (NOT the Dual Strike's fault)...make sure it is OK in Game Controllers...

Thats what I'm doing, but the after selecting the dual strike controller and bringing up the properties, there is no option to calibrate.

Make sure you change the mode from FX to Joystick.  Then you should be able to set up x and y axis zones.

Yeah, I've tried using the zone setting to calibrate it, but that is'nt cutting it very well.  The Y-Axis cannot be adjusted for a full throw and neither axis can be centered.  It may be the best I can do.

Does anyone know of another good controller to hack?

I'll try replacing the pots.  They are both 5K and look like original arcade pieces (They're marked "Long Life").  it sort of makes sense, I've begun to notice the pots sometimes 'jump' without being moved, so they might just be worn out.  Thanks

Did you take apart the yoke for cleaning?

This model has no gears in it.  I believe all of the Hydra yokes were like this.

You will need to do some tweaking with Mame settings to get it to center correctly.  Adjust the sensitivity high enough that you get a full throw, but not so high that the accuracy suffers.  It will take a little experimentation.
