Countertop dreamcast shooter cab *help*
« on: January 08, 2005, 11:37:23 pm »
Hey guys, I've decided to build a vertical shooter cab (countertop version).

Here is what is going to be inside:

-17'' inch PC monitor
-Sega Dreamcast w/vga hookup

I had some questions for you all.

Q: Where can I buy those oversized buttons found on the japanese candy cabs (neo29, sega astro city, etc)?

Q: Should I make this cab a 1 or 2 player cabinet?

Q: How many buttons do you think this cab needs for the player (3,4,6)?

Q: Will I run into any problems mounting the pc monitor vertically?

If anyone can answer some of these questions that would be great!

Some more info on the cab... The cabinet design should look like a mini candy cab that is white with dreamcast styled everything (White, red). I cant wait to build this thing, its gonna look sweet!

Which name do you all like the best?  "Veritgo" or "Vertical Horizon".

1: Do a search for the sanwa buttons. Himura shomething is the name of the store. Trading maybe.

2: 2 PLAYER! Man shooters are 2x the fun with 2 people.

3: 4 Buttons should be enough, maybe even 3. Check the games you are going to play the most and see how many  buttons they require.

4: The PC Monitor should be fine, I don't believe you should have an issue, if anything degaussing it should solve the problem.

5: Oh, there is no 5.

Well, keep us posted on the plans and stuff, and if you need hacked controllers you know who to ask (me)!

Sounds like a very cool project, might take up on something like this myself.

So Hiub 1, how do those hacked dreamcast pads work...I'm real interested in buying 1 or 2. What I mean is how do I hook them up to the microswitches, etc. Im still kinda new to the whole hardware aspects of this whole arcade thing. The only thing I've done is take a apart an X-arcade and put it in a dynamo cab...which doesnt take a lot of brains to do. So hit me up man.

Thanks,

-Ben

This is Rev.1 mockup of my Veritgo mini-cab. I know its crap quality but you get the idea i'm trying to go for "jap cab". That sounds almost politically incorrect.

Certain games offer up the option of a vertical screen. Ikaruga being the best vertical shooter ever, it alone could justify the vertical mounting of the screen. :)

Really.  I have about 4 Dreamcasts but haven't ever really played them much.  I'll have to snag a copy of Ikaruga and check it out.

Dude, they're easy to find.  I spend saturday mornings going to yard sales in the spring and summer.  I see them around quite a bit, and will see even more this spring now that Gamestop no longer buys them.

I actually downloaded this game disc called "Dreamcast Shooters Pack". It has 4 shooters on there. It includes: Ikaruga, Border Down, Psyvariar 2 and Zero Gunner 2. I think all these games do Vertical...I've tried it in 3 outta 4 of these games. Awesomeness.
