Jamma MAME??? anyone heard of this?
« on: January 06, 2005, 03:37:41 am »
ok so i just went into some local arcade depots today in the hope of being able to pick up some parts from my cab, but instead all it did was through a spanner in the works, seems every time i think i know what i am going to do someone offers me something "better" or at least a different aproache...
the latest thing to come to light is something i have never even heard of before JAMMA MAME, here is what i understood it to be (keep in mind my knowledge of Jamma is limited so i may have misunderstood)

the idea is this, you have to make/or get some female (or maybe it was male) end of the jamma plug to plug into the PC, so the PC is in the jamma harness (??)....god i just know i'm not saying this right lol.
and the Jamma board acts as the motherboard of the PC..or something to that effect, so that mame games have go through the jamma board, suposedly the advantage of this is that it allowes you to harness the power of the jamma board and play polygonal games. like tekken.

Has anyone heard of someone doing this, and if you do understand how this setup works PLEASE feel free to explain it again in very basic noob language, because the guy was a tad grumpy and was rushing over the details and just ratteling off names...so i'm a little confused.
but it sounded kind of cool.
 ???

since JAMMA refers to a wiring format (i think it is japanese arcade machine manufacturers association. paige?) maybe he was just talking about running mame in a cab that is wired for JAMMA. this has been done before. you can get a keyboard emulator especially for it. the JPAC is the one i know of and want to use for an upright cab.
what this means is that you can pretty much just plug the pc into the cabs existing wiring and off you go. it has the bonus of being able to run original arcade game motherboards as well. just unplug the PC and plug in the game PCB. this is why im interested in going that way for my next project.
this is what i reckon he was talking about, but im mystified by the "pc running through the jamma board" bit. and the "harnessing of the jamma power" bit too.unless maybe he didn't explain it very well.
anyway, what IS definite is that JAMMA is just a standardised wiring format (like USB or PS2 or serial port or a PCI slot etc) so that any JAMMA wired cab could take any JAMMA style motherboard, making upgrades simpler in the arcades. it is a way of making them 'compatable'.
now let's wait for the real answer from the gurus!

lol yeah, those guru's and their answers, what would we do without them  ;D
yeah i was suprised by what he said too, i mean i'd never heard of it before, but he definatly said that the games were going through the jamma mother bord, but i was having a VERY hard time trying to visualise how this was supposed to work, so i thought better ask BYOAC.com lol
mind you this also came from the same guy who looked at me like i ws crazy when i insited that i needed a coin door for my mame cab, so who knows whats going on in his head  ::)

its probably one of these ive seen a few of these in arcades,

its basically a hacked pc/pcb set  with 300 games on it, but ll you need to do is plug it into you harness and away you go!  pricey though...

That is correct, but keep in mind that it has the NEW 100+ Megabyte neogeo games and a slowish hard drive, and those are the 30 second loaders.

A lot of people in the arcade industry only have a passing knowledge of mame, and have many confusions about it.
