Bare with me on this one.
Does there exist or is there a way of controlling your MP3s via a web interface.
I want to store a whole load of MP3s on a PC that does not have a monitor output or touchscreen/keyboard/keypad/mouse input but only has a web page server running. Then, via PPC or laptop connected wirelessly or via bluetooth, log onto the web page and select an album or track or playlist or whatever. The track/album/artist info can all be seen on the wireless device in the confort of your sofa.
I'm not talking streaming MP3s here, I want the actual machine that contains the MP3s, that is connected to an Amplifier, to play the music, all the hadheld device is doing is acting as a glorified remote.
I apologise if this has already been asked but I did do a quick search and could not find anything in this forum. I will do a google search and see what comes up.

I have Winamp running on my MP3 server. I have Winamp Web Interface (WAWI) as a plugin to Winamp (http://www.flippet.org/wawi/). And I have RCA's Lrya (http://www.rca.com/product/viewdetail/0,2588,PI700436,00.html) connected to the audio out on the server with the receiver plugged into my main stereo(s). I can control the jukebox and its playlists from any PC on the network and have it play on the home stereo. Works great.

You can find the Lyras on ebay for about $40 (or less).

Is something like that what you are looking for?

I will have a look, this could be exactly what I'm looking for.
I will be connecting directly to the the amp so I don't need to buy any Lyra but worth considering in the future.

Another option - not exactly "web", but communicates over TCP/IP

That's more like the one I saw in Live '98 (or whatever year it was at the time)
But I'm not quite ready to spend the week messing around with Linux yet, maybe in the future when I have plenty of time on my hands.

I'm working on an app to do a similar job. It's made up of a server program that plays the music (and serves out lists of available tracks) and a client that controls the server. The server prog could be set to run at startup on a pc without a screen

OK, I've just had a look and it looks great, but what I'm really looking for is a web interface, that way I don't need a PC to access the song list, I just need a portable device like a P800 over bluetooth or an IPAQ with a WiFi card. So far the closest thing I've seen so far that runs in Windows is that Winamp plugin. Will have to give it a go sometime soon.

If you are inclined to get dirty and program your own interface, you might want to have a look at HTTPQ (http://www.kostaa.com/winamp/). Allows same functionality as the WAWI/Winamp combo I mentioned above but gives you the commands to build with as you see fit. I have not had time to work with it yet myself, but it might be another avenue for you to investigate.

Thanks for the streamsicle link. Nice piece of software.

There are a ton of these on sourceforge.net. I didn't have time to try them all out.
but these looked pretty good just reading the description and checking out some of the demos

I've set up MS Remote Desktop on my home machine in order to access my MP3's away from home. So all I do is Remote Desktop to my home machine from work and then select the songs I want to play. The songs play on Windows Media Player at home and I can listen to the music on my speakers at work.

streamsicle stops indexing at 2911 songs for me. i deleted the song it was stuck on and restarted and it stopped again.

there was some info on increasing the memory allocated, but i can't find that parm.

while i wait for my sourceforge logon, anyone have any other ideas?

BTW, that remote desktop never moved the sound to my client. it does play at home though.

Yep, that's Streaming not actual remote control. I don't want that. I've had a play with WAWI and that is the best so far but I will still have a play with the Linux based one at some point soon.

My favorite is netjuke, it can be set up to play locally. Streams remotely too. (www.netjuke.org)

Jinzora is a close second, but I would wait until the beta is done.

I too would like a nice interface for mp3 selection and playlist creation but have the actual music play off the server computer which is wired to speakers all over the place.

But here is the catch. I would like something easy to read on an arcade monitor and more importantly... State independent ie. I can close the client and reopen it all I want and have it resume to whatever I was looking at when I closed it.... why? So when playing games on my MAME cabinet I can quickly pop over to my jukebox interface, add a few songs to the playlist, exit out of the interface and retuern to my game menus while the music continues to play off the main music server which is located in another room but phyusiocally wired to my main stereo in the room where my arcade cab is.

I am experimenting right now with launching Ultravnc fullscreen from a shortcut in my gamelist (using mamewah) to look at hopefully a jukebox program running on the music server but the problem with this is it requires everything be setup right (apps running, maximized, etc) on the main machine to look good and sometimes I may not have planned this all ahead of time so it isn't working too sliuck on those ocassions. I want this all to look professional and not like a vnc session to a normal pc somewhere in the house - even though that is what I am doing.

Multi Client Support

The ability to control/interface with your server through one or more pc's or pocket pc's for that matter is the future of home theater computing. Let me give you an example, let's say you have a multizone audio system setup from your computer to several different rooms, each room could have a touch screen that controls the audio for that specific room.

Pretty much anything you do using web technology is set up to stream the audio file to the client, instead of playing it on the host.
