Erm... when you get to the size of an apartment... it's probably not a cabinet anymore.

22" wide or so...about 5' high.

I show you pictures tommorrow - you tell me if you think it looks like an arcade cabinet or not.

Those dimensions would make a damned small apartment.  Where do you live, Tokyo?

Ah... I used to live on the Fenway, so I know just what you're talking about.  The apartments there are pretty small.  Not exactly 5 feet by 22 inches, but small...

I think I'm from smart-ass-ville too, because my first thought when I read your title was a cabinet so huge you could live in it, not small and space efficient.
I pictured someone ringing the doorbell, and you popping your head out the coin door. That is super-stupid, but it's really making me laugh.  ;D

Call Guiness you may have a world record with your tiny apartment.

I lived in an apartment in Buenos Aires that was 10' x 10'. Seriously that was the size of the WHOLE apartment. The shower head was installed over the toilet, so I could take a shower and a crap at the same time. There was about 2 fett of space between my bed and the fridge on the other side of the wall. If I opened it up no one could get past.

ok,

for those of you who have a problem with ambiguous language.

apartment-sized means: small enough to be placed in an apartment setting.  I know, its a tough concept.

if you go back and read my original post, i complimented the board for how helpful reading posts were - then i begin my project, and get ranked on.

i guess ill spare you all and not post pictures.

Just trying to have fun.  :D

Someone told me I had been elected Mayor of Smartassville.  My first act as an elected official was to mandate any living quarter be larger than 2' x 5', but evidently there are a few slums here and there.  I wanted to attract a baseball team, but ChadTower musta got the last good one.  I've heard of his home team....The Chuckleheads, IIRC.

Perhaps instead of a coin door, you can see if Happs has a special on humor, sense of.

If you call THAT getting ranked on, I'd have you in tears on a daily basis if you were an aquantance of mine!  Toughen up, sally, that was wicked funny.  Make witcher pics and relax a bit, you'll enjoy life more.  I promise.

Lighten up.  You can bet now that everyone wants to see pics even more.  People here have a sense of humor, well..  most of of us...  I give you alot of credit for building a cabinet at all.  I have been talking about building my first one for years.  My step father used to work for a vending company when I was younger.  I talked about hacking a joystick when the NES first came out, (I have been soldering since 5th grade).  I still have NOT built my first cab, so I can really appreciate yours, wether its a bartop, of the coin door has a door knob.  When I finally build mine, I am sure I am going to get some jokes, but whatever.  You should have noticed reading here that after a few jokes on peoples cabinets, it ALWAYS ends up the same:  If you like it, its GREAT for you.  Like I said, I'm a procrastinator, I might end up drilling some joystick holes in my coffee table before I build a whole cabinet...  Lets see some pics of yours already...

Apparently you have never been to my apartment. I have 11 uprights, 1 cocktail, 1 cockpit, and one countertop in my 2 bedroom apartment and it isn't even cramped.

Why the low height? Do you have 6' ceilings?

Everyone seems to be under the mistaken impression that a single normal sized cabinet takes up a lot of space. A normal full size cabinet has an identical footprint to that of an end table.

Yeah, but you're single, with no children living with you.  I could do the same thing, except many more, if my wife would allow it.

I could add a wife without losing any games (other than the TMNT in the bedroom that I WANT to get rid of), but children would require losing some games.

But who am I kidding, there are two things wrong with that scenario.

#1. The last time I kissed a woman was June 2003, and the last time before that was Feb 2002. So the idea of me finding a wife is crazy, especially at my age in my subculture.

#2. If I could find a wife I probably wouldn't have nearly as much time for the hobby anyway, and would want to lose some games, and you KNOW I would be under pressure to do so.

Thanks TOK....i think my sub blew a fuse...its a cambridge soundworks thing, i took it apart but it looks like the fuse is buried somewhere.

it was tough to squeeze that trackball in there.  i may redo the control panel, make it a bit deeper.

Today was my sixth day to work on the project...I filled some holes, sanded, and primed this thing.

Day five was the front and front door....

Anyone have any suggestions on colors of paint??

This will probably be a golden tee themed cabinet.

A barrel lock will not only look a bit more authentic, but you can keep the door locked shut and keep little hands out (assuming you ever have kids around??)

Yeah, I think a barrel lock would be a HUGE improvement.  Not as authentic as a coin door, but much better than that knob.

Thank you, thank you.

Barrell lock will go on after paint etc...

day 7 today, waiting for paint to dry...not my favorite part of the project.

I most def. wanted a smaller cabinet - i ran golden tee pc today, just to check it out with my trackball - it kicks ass!!!

Did you get rid of your pinball machine?

I just wanted a smaller cabinet - i see no reason for it to reach the ceiling...i actually have high ceilings....

4'9" seemed good.

Oh yeah, paint works wonders.

I went with the Behr Home Depot Brand - i heard mixed things, but am totally satisfied with two coats so far.

I went with latex enamel semi-gloss...good stuff.

I primed, sanded, patched holes, primed again, sanded.

Then two coats of paint, sanding in between.

any plans to throw a coin door on there?  I always find that it dresses up the front of the cab.  just a thought

Not to start on again but I did check out the thread to see if we had the first 'giant' byoac-er  ;D

Anyway I really like the cab shape - looks great :)  I would also recommend a barrel lock instead of that knob, unless you really don't want to leave a key it or have to find the key out to open the front.  A coin door would also look good, but this is no biggie - you can add one later if you want.

Since your CP is quite small I may have gone for a smaller trackball, then again I know the 3" ones are nice too...

i took a day off today!  damn it..i wanted to finish that thing by sunday.

Anyway, I like the overall shape of the little guy. Should look nice once finished.

I have a few hours of wiring to do, and have to install the marquee, thats it!

I worked about 10 days, total of about 60 hours...

Here was my final price tag.

PRICE LIST:

800mhz Pc and Monitor   $150   (craigslist)

Wood  $75  (2 sheets of plywood and a couple 2x4's)

Pc Speakers from Walmart  $14

14 Buttons, 2 Super joysticks, +shipping, $50

3" trackball ready with mouse interface and buttons    $50 (ebay)

Paint and primer  $35

misc. hardware, wire, flouro light, etc...  $50

Plexi and lexan....$35

GRAND TOTAL - $450 give or take $50...i know i wasn't over 500...probably not under 400...

all in all, it was a bargain - i had an absolute blast making this machine....!

I will post some final pictures soon, with the marquee, etc...

HUGE THANKS are in order to this board....i truly had a rewarding experience over the past couple weeks; i really can't put it into words.  it was fun/challenging/rewarding all in one.

Looks like the black around the CPO and the cabinet door could use some touch-up. Bit of white showing through.

To stop would mean my death - and upon my deathbed, you wouldn't be around to hear me whisper ..... "rosebud.....woulda painted that door to match the rest of the cab"

Stuff like that, you mean?  I notice you don't have your blaze orange on, so you may have a problem hunting the comment out on that one.

Also, I wish the monitor bezel on there was as black as my heart.

I'm not too keen on the red cabinet door either, but other than that it looks good!. I like the unique design of the lowboy.

Will you be using smoked or clear plexi??

Have you started on your Marquee design?

Thanks, i used clear plexi...

The marquee probably will be the most recent golden tee marquee, its red and blue and goes welll with the rest of the cabinet...

Im definately not into a "mame" marquee...and prob. not creative enough to make my own - plus i love golden tee.

I would consider RBI baseball also - i haven't looked at any examples though

Would you like photos of my cabs?  Somehow I think you're under the impression that I've got no cabs, therefore I'm not qualified to respond to your requests for comments because I don't give them in the form you wish.  That's ok.  I can laugh it off.  You'll see that the world looks a whole lot better when you don't take it so seriously, but I understand....it's a frustrating project and all.

I'd spend more time at the ministry, but it ends up giving me an even happier outlook on life.  Can you imagine if I were MORE happy-go-lucky?  They might change the definition of irascible just for you!

You didn't comment on my comments - I thought that was your request - for comments on the project.  I can't do much about the ass thing.  It'd be like asking water not to be wet.  ;D

You seriously need to chill.  Now.

There was some gentle ribbing about an 'apartment sized cab' which IS funny.

But now you're starting to take this to a personal level, which is not.

Both of you, shake hands, to your corners, and call it a day.

nice job and congrats on a cab well done.

a few things i would change...

if thats plexi on top of the control panel id remove it. it looks out of place and you dont need it unless you are putting printed graphics underneith.

i wouldve made the sides of the cab flush with the top of the control panel. the way it looks now your palm is going to rest on the half inch protruding side piece.

i would paint the front door and the visible monitor frame black.

golf themed graphics would work well with this cab.

Has anyone got any examples of plexi vs. smoked glass? I'm intrigued as to the differences to aesthetic look and viewing quality.

Any links appreciated :D

What's with the shoe bin next to the cab?  Do you have to take your shoes off to play or something?

either get a coindoor, or paint that door black. it doesn't look right. too distracting from the rest of the cabinet.

Otherwise, nice first go!  ;D

I dunno...the red in the cab just kills it for me, makes the flaws more noticeable and clashes with the black, other than that, looks ok.

Thats hilarious...i wasn't looking to build a "flawless" arcade machine....that would've been too much work!

its more than functional....

gunstar, thanks for the comments...i think its been about 60-40 against the red...but then people turn it on, and they worry less about the color scheme..

Umm..

1. It seems there are some bare red spots on your control panel, like its a very think coat of paint and you can see through it.

2. Because you put plexi, I believe thats what it is, on your control panel, there is a visible line showing where the plexi ends, where normally thats not a problem because of T molding.

3. It seems as though there is no paint on the small area between where your black front peice meets your red control panel. It seems, from pictures youve posted, there is some sort of gap or something, leaving bare wood from the black peice showing.

4. There seems to be residue of black paint on your front red door that you tried covering up, but couldnt. ( this is where I got the "you can see the flaws easier when you used the red paint)

I just thinking the red door being painted black would make the whole  cabinet look better. You seem to be getting snappy in your replies, Im not insulting you or your cab, Im just giving opinions.

LOL, I have never seen someone so defensive, and from someone that has been asking for comments on his cab. If you arent looking for critisism, dont ask for it.

drew, how did your team do this year?

probably would have been cool to watch a couple playoff games.

They did better than I thought they'd do, but I wish they had lost even the division.  We could use a few higher draft picks than what we've been getting.  Probably now that they took the job away from Mike Sherman, we'll do better with the picks we DO have (instead of trading UP to get a PUNTER!) and probably draft a friggen quarterback (finally!) this year.

It was actually cool to watch ALL the playoff games this year.  I like the Patriots (gotta respect a team that's as well coached as they are and put the plan into action each week) and I like the Iggles because I'm a big Andy Reid fan.....so actually, this Super Bowl, I've got the best of both worlds.  Two teams I like to watch battle it out.  I believe unless T.O. starts, the Pats win again.

I ALMOST went to the Packer's playoff game, as tickets were reasonably priced, but instead, as an anniversary present, I'm getting to go to a pre-season game next year when it's nice out, and visit the remodeled Lambert (sic) Field and enjoy it with my wife, her first visit EVER to Lambeau.  We may make a "honeymoon" of it and stay at my parent's place that week, perhaps take in a few practices, get a few autographs, enjoy a nice relaxing week....meh.

Do you follow a team?  Football, that is.  I bet you're a Pats fan  :D

Tell us some of your playoff stories you've enjoyed this year.

Yes! that's exactly what it needs.  Red T-molding around the edges of the cab and CP would go a long way towards giving it that "finished" look.

T-molding hiding the plexi is more of a BYOAC than it is an authentic arcade thing, very, very few dedicated games came with plexi, for that manner very few games (other than 4 player ones) came with t-molding rimming the control panel.

I'm not sure if any game actually came with plexi that meets up with the t-molding to be level, although a lot of people here have done that.

I believe new Midway games (with Hanaho cabinets) used t-molding to cover the plexi. In fact, I'd put money on it.

I'm not sure if any game actually came with plexi that meets up with the t-molding to be level, although a lot of people here have done that.

A LOT of ops added plexi later on when they converted cabs to newer things, though.  Nearly every cab I've gotten that wasn't an original was that way, and most of the cabs I've seen at auction.  It's almost like a plexi sheet came with the conversion kits.
