Warlords cabinet rebuild
« on: December 27, 2004, 04:18:43 pm »
Well I won it on EBAY but it has its problems.

Iam going to take detail measurements and post them (since NO current owners will) and I may also try to get some parts manufatured like legs and swivels.

Anyway there is monitor burn and ROM corruption. The game plays great but some of the wording is messed up (see pic). I hope someone can clue me in on what could be the possible problem and how to solve it.

Looks like you need new roms!  I don't know if those ROM chips are flashable or if you'll just have to replace the entire chips...

I would first blow away any dust, dirt, or grime then clean and reset any removable chips.  Static is your enemy so make sure to follow some anti-static procedure.  If that doesn't work, I'd get some new roms programed.  I wouldn't unless I had to reprogram the other ones just in case something went wrong.

Krawdaddy. Now is the time to invest in an eprom reader/burner.

Do they make them for specific types of eproms?
How much do they cost?

Also is there a place that will burn chips for me?

Does anyone know of a good replacement monitor for a 14" Sanyo monitor?

your monitor looks fine. Could use a cap kit though.

By the time you pay someone for a full set of Warlords eproms you could have almost bought your own eprom burner (they are only around $100 - $125). A newer eprom burner is going to support HUNDREDS of EPROMS including the ones on your warlords.

Do you believe this to be the problem with the graphics?

Also, are there tutorials for reading and burning these eproms.

The mame versions are almost ALWAYS the correct versions.

Does the game mess up the same way each time, or do the letters and numbers vary?

Flash isn't the exact word.

Most arcade games use EPROMS. ERASABLE programmable, read only memory. Some only used PROMS (this is rare), which is just PROGRAMMABLE, Read only memory (without the eraseable part).

Basically it goes like this. Use the reader/burner to read each one of your chips and verify them with the ROMIDENT software. One will be bad. You don't have an eraser, so fork out the $3 for a new blank EPROM (or PROM) as needed and use the programmer to program it. Don't even bother buying an eraser unless you build up a stack of bad ones worth as much as an eraser costs.

Doesnt sound to hard

Does that burner integrate with a PC or does it have its own interface?

Also do you have a link to a vender?

Kind Regards\
Kraw

BTW is is possible to find a schematic for a warlords and find out what eproms I would need?  Maybe I could start there.

They are USB now a days.

It takes a REAL WIZARD to be able to look at a game schematic and tell which EPROM is bad. Warlords just isn't common enough.

Usually minor. At this point I change my recommendation to first rebuild the AR2 board (with one of Bob Robert's kits), and if the sound doesn't come back then send the board out for repair. I am pretty sure elektronforge fixes that board type.

Depending on the cost of shipping it there and back, plus the repair, it may be more effective to just give the broken one away to someone at that point and buy a working board.

Well it looks like electronforge is going to service my PCB.  It looks like the bottom is falling out of the cab.

what I want to know is that I found all artwork except for the glass underlay.  I even found the serial number decal replacement.  Would it be wrong to completely rebuild the cabinet and transferall all hardware and componants to the new cab.  Would this be an outrage? One of the seven sins or would I be doing the cab a favor?  Iam going to beadblast all painted parts such as the legs and repaint with automotive paint.

Any opinions?

How bad is the cab?
Just refer to Vader88's re-build of a Missile Command. In the end he felt his scratch-built cab was too flawed to keep as is and he parted it out.

I would think a re-build would be in order as long as the builder was willing to pay attention to detail and had some skill at woodworking. I think that you could easily meet those criteria, based on the Goldmine project.

I am in the process of "fixing" a stern upright and having just built a scratch cabinet I would say that the scratch cab was easier. It was also better constructed than this janky Stern. I could easily start this one from scratch, and make it exactly like the Stern built one. (Well, Paige could probably figure it out. ;))

Kraw - Darn you, I was bidding against you on that Warlords... What did shipping end up costing? How did you get it shipped? Rhode Island is pretty far.

Also, that monitor roll is typical of warlords cocktails. Rod (Zinifer) from RGVAC did a wonderful restore on it.  Will show you how to fix the monitor and character problems. Best of luck.

Any updates?  I'm dying for a set of acurate plans!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen
