new 2/3 scale project - mini ms pacman *MAMEY*
« on: December 21, 2004, 10:59:32 pm »
OK so you guys may have seen my mini Mr Do machine I made in October.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,26939.0.html

A few people I know have been hounding me for machines so I broke down and built one for someone.

Here's a 1/3 scale ms pacman I put together. Not an exact replica but pretty close I think. Did this one in about 30 hours.

  • PII/500
  • 128mb RAM
  • DOS 7
  • ATI Rage II
  • SB Live PCI
  • 17" monitormounted vertical
  • keywiz eco
  • dmame 6 something (i forget)
  • custom side and kick panel art I revised from artwork I found to fit the cabinet. a little expensive to print but really sets off the game.
  • still debating on a very simple but cool front end that will work vertical and have a list on one side and screenshot on the other. not loving arcade os and gamelauncher layouts.

the machine is about 4' high and I put some 2" casters on it which are a little recessed underneath so it's probably about 4'1" - 4'3".

Sorry. not nearly as many photos as the mr DO project but I'm building another one of these next month so I'll document it.

sorry for the blurry photos.. the flash was giving the thing a disgusting look so i was shooting without flash.

looking at it now.. it's lacking a nice ms pac bezel .. but i literally odered the side art for next day dellivery and had to pay 100% rush charge so I tried to kep the sq. footage to a minimum.

next one will have the 'woiks'. haha

i'm also a little vexed at the fact that there's seemingly no way to have all the functions necessary to operate the emulator (pause, coin, tab, etc) without having a <auto-censored> load of buttons on the CP.

That looks great!  It is not 1/3 scale though...maybe more like 2/3+ scale.  Try adding they extra buttons to the top next time.  I recessed some buttons in the top of mine when I ran out of room.  Especially if they are not buttons typically used by the general public.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

sorry. i mean i scaled it down 1/3 (about 30%).

buttons on the top wouldn't really work on this because it's only 4 feet tall so walking up to it and it having buttons on the top would look a little wierd.

i'm going to be looking into some dual pole (?) microswitches. then I can run some of the buttons in series so that certain button combos trigger key presses.

Very nice and professional looking.

My only question is why the horizontal orientation?  Would Pac Man look better verticle?

Plus, a cab like this screams for verticle classics (donkey kong, etc)

ok i see where you're seeing what appears to be horizontal monitor.
that's just the shadow form the marquee area. actually this is a 17" vertical setup.

the idea was to play ms pacman as faithfully as possible and all the vertical classics. with the ati rage card they rock full screen at 60+ fps with scanlines and no border.

i'll try to get a photo of the monitor on and post it so you can see it in action before i deliver it.

Ah, true, mine is a mini but it's black so it is hardly noticed.  Light blue on the other hand....
How is the marquee installed?  Is it removable?  Sorry but the pictures look like it is stuck in there forever which is fine but I was wondering about changing the light bulb.
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

the top of the cabinet is screwed down from the top by 4 screws. the light fixture sits on the bottom marquee board. to change the light.. remove 4 screws.. pull off the top.. change buld and reverse.

the marquee is held in by slots i routed in the top and bottom pieces. then.. the top just sandwiches it into that channel.

i had a frogger cabinet once and this is how it was done.

Nice, that is just an excellent job.  I'm hoping my daughter's mini will turn out as good.
