My control panel (pics)
« on: September 30, 2002, 01:32:08 am »
Thanks to all the help from this board I have finally finished my control panel.  I am working on an entire cab but I decided to complete my removable cp first.

Contruction wise...the box for the cp is made out of 3/4" plywood with the top being 1/2" MDF.  The lexan on top is 1/4".  All buttons are wired up using an IPAC.  Everything tested out fine the first time.  Must be beginners luck.   The art was created in Photoshop and printed at Kinkos on there normal paper.

I will be cutting out the sides for my cab tomorrow and beginning the work on that.  I'll be putting a site together soon.   Any comments would be appreciated.

I really like the decent look of the black joysticks and buttons! Never saw such a relaxing design with so many sticks&buttons without disturbing  :)

Say, how big is this panel? Looks like a lot of fun for 4-player games ;D

Thanks!  I tried to make it as simple as possible and I couldn't be happier with the results.  The panel measures 48" x 20".  The corners are cut at 45" angles 10" from the top.

Very Very nice looking control panel!!  A few quick questions if you don't mind A: what kind of joysticks/buttons are those?  B: what did you use to cut the lexan, and C: how much did that overlay cost you to print at kinkos?  I'm very down with CvS2 so I most definitely approve of the background.  Very very nice indeed.

Excellent job, really sharp looking. Since you have a CvS2 overlay are you planning on putting a DC/PS2 in your cab?

You guys always freak me out with your Graphic Designs :)

Just when I thought I've seen it all, someone comes along with another cool design.

I must ask :) What were you graphics sources? and what DPI and Resolutions where you working with?

I like MvC also...but I think CvSNK sticks more towards the original Street Fighter style.  MvC is fun...but I'm not all about those 100 hit combos and jumping around like Superman.

Joysticks are Happs supers and the buttons are HAPPS horizontals.  I was really torn as to what joystick to get but after testing these they seem to work great.  I used the same bit I used to cut the wood to cut the lexan.  I scratched it all to hell but put a ton of elbow grease into it and removed most of the major ones. The art covers up all the other imperfections.  The background costs about $64 to print. :(  I felt dirty while I was handing them the money.  No other local options tho...and they did do a great job.

I do plan on puting my DC in the cab.  Kinda makes me wish I would have went with a gamepad hack instead....since I ever tore apart 4 psx sticks and wired em up already.  I'll proly make another cp soon for DC and PS2 games.

Quote
I must ask  What were you graphics sources? and what DPI and Resolutions where you working with?

I spent an entire day looking around for some good high quality artwork online.  I finally ran accros a site that had some high quality scans from one of there art books.  If I can find the source images I'll post.  The final art was 7200x3168, 300dpi.  I made the image a little larger than I needed and just trimmed the edges.  I'll post back when I find the originals.

Well thanks for all the comments!  I'll off to cut the wood for my cab!  Yay!! Finally!!

I just noticed something on the panel that I was curious about.  I see that you have the start and coin buttons across the top labelled in the order 1, 2, 3 and 4.  But I'm assuming (because of your button layouts that your player's controls are in the order of something like 3, 1, 2 and 4.  I would think you would want to reposition you coin-up and start buttons infront of its respective player's controls so that, for example, Player 3 (far left) doesn't have to reach all the way across Player 1 and Player 2 to insert coins or hit start again.

Otherwise the panel looks fantastic!  Very similar to what I want to do.  Excellent work!

I'm not trying to accuse you of anything... but those are cgi graphics aren't they?  I mean all of the buttons are perfect and just a little too shiny, plus all of the relections are at exactly the same orientation.

At first I thought it might be the plexi causing the extra shine, but then noticed that there isn't any reflection on the face of the plexi.  So how in the world could you get refelection on the buttons but not on the plexi?

It's a cool design, I really like it, but please level with me, those pics are fake right?

Please don't take offense to this, it's just they look fake to me and I would much rather see an unaltered pic of your work. I"m sure it looks great, I just wnat to see what it really looks like.

Anyway nice job, and if I'm wrong I apologize.

Oooh, I like these games... Care to put your $$ where your mouth is?   ;D ;D
If you look close, there is something present in each pic that would lead me to believe that the pics are real.  Also, I used black buttons before and they really are that shiny in photos.

Good work, madk!  Would look better with a spinner, though....   :)

I don't think he went to the effort to model the bottle of glue, the towels, etc.  Besides, the first pic is a bit out of focus... unusual for CG...

I'm not a fan of fighting games myself, but it's very nicely done!

Wow...I guess I'll have to take all this as a compliment.  But on the other hand I do feel very insulted.  I post a few pics on my cp that I've been working on for the last month and it is accused of being a fake.  Ha...I just can't belive it.

But as you all know it is real.  Tonight I have the sides for my cab all cut out and will have pics up soon.  If anyone needs some proof of my cab.  I created a few vid files that I can send...AIM - madk19.

Thanks for all the posts and tips....oh yeah...I couldn't find any black hardware anyware and I didn't feel like painting.  I'm happy with the look.

Howard is just jealous thats all.  ;D  You can clearly see the reflection of the panel in the other plastic (or glass?) stuff above it (what is that anyway? you trying to build an all lexan cabinet!?  ;D ).

MADK,
I do have  question, what kind of paper is that.HATE to admit but my art was scratched when i got it home.Kinko's over here kinda suck. They are just stupid and can't do anything right.

What paper did you use?Did you laminate the thing?Did you use the opition where you smooth the picture.I am still not very good at makin arts.reason i ask because mine came out too smooth >:(.More then I wanted and result is not very cool.I am happy for the time being but things could be better. :)  I am thinking about building another since i got an offer for the panel already. So answer my questions once you get a chance.

And got to agree with dave_k here.Howard is sooooo jealous. What can I say..... but it's not polite to throw in comments like "HEY,your control panel is fake man!".

Guys, Guys clam down!  The lighting in those pics are extremely wierd it freaked me out.  As usual you take things the wrong way, consider it a compliment as that it some damn good photography. I meant no offsense they just looked fake, I asked around and other people agreed with me.  As usual though I was the only one to have the b@lls to say anything.  Once again I'm sorry and I really like it.

I used the standard white paper that kinkos offers...no type of smoothing or anything.  The clerk tried to sell me on some other options but being my first time I wanted to try this.  I was going to get it laminated but figured that since I have plexi there really is no need.  My best advice is that you actually create your file to the size that you need it.  Don't have kinkos blow anything up.  You have to have everything set and hand it to them for the printing.  The fools charged me $5 just to open up a .tiff file. :(

Oh yeah...and Howard I do take your comments as a compliment.  Leave him alone everyone! :) ha

Madk,
Thanks for the answer but how exactly do you call that paper. Is it scratched anywhere on the art?Is it matt paper?

I wanna do this for the last time and hopefully I would be happy this time around. :)

ALSO,I sold both my panels last night...

Art work one for $225 and the other one for $185...

Now I would finally go for a better one. :)

By the looks of the control layout I'd say you plan to get some 4 player D&D Tower of doom/Shadow over mystara action going.
Good thing too, D&D shadow over mystara is the greatest game ever made,; and your control panel will certainly do it justice.

Love it

I have an all black button setup, that was only going to be temporary until I could get a theme going with happ colored horizontal buttons (I have the x-arcade special bag o' 20 black buttons currently in service)

Maybe If I can come up with a good underlay that's background color isn't black or super dark I could make mine look half as sharp as yours =)

Well on my reciept all it says is "white".  It isn't matte...just the normal inkjet paper they use I belive.  They offered me other kinds of paper but I just went with what the clerk called "normal".

Damn that's gonna be such a sweet cabinet.  What are you using to cut out that wood?  A router?  And how high is that control panel?  Looks unusually low, like a sit down styled one.

Hey, how would you like it so when you play 4 player games,a nd only for 4 player games your controls are in order from left ot right, player 1, player 2, player3, player4, instead of player3, player1, player2, player4???
