Dumb Question- Turning on TBs/Spinners
« on: December 15, 2004, 12:29:09 am »
Running Analog+ w/ 2 TBs and 2 Spinners. I believe everything is wired up correctly here- I just don't know how to turn on the things in Mame!  I know I go to the Tab menu- and I can get to the part where you tell it, say, which buttons on the keyboard go to which on the CP, etc- but on the trackball part- it says trackball x and trackball 2, tracball 3, etc.  I hit enter to change the setting (currently shows nothing in there)- how do I tell it to recognize the other TB and spinner?  It recognizes player 2 TB just fine, but not player1's. Can someone tell me how to turn on each TB and Spinner in Mame?
Thanks
D

Isn't a trackball just identfied as a mouse by Windows & Mame? I thought it was just a case of selecting mouse control?

MAME32, right?

Status Bar - Options - Default Game Options -  Controllers Tab - Check "Enable Mouse Input"

- - -

Commandline MAME - run MAME -cc from the C:\MAME> prompt, then edit mame.ini to set

Dang- I keep doing this- I gotta be more specific here...  lol!

Nope, running Analog+ on XP. I have the 'enable mouse input' turned on in options- but, I think the problem is in the Tab menu. Trackball X has something like Up Arrow + J1 button, and the same for the other Trackball X feature, and nothing set for the Trackball 2 and above features. I think that's the problem, I just don't know what to type in there to tell it to turn them on. Maybe U-Rebel_Scum can help me out? lol...
thanks guys!

Been a while since I've used it, but in Analog +, you should have a "Mouse" or "Mouse Settings" or sth selection from the TAB menu on games that can use a trackball

Well, I go into the Tab Menu, configure input (genereal), and then there's a HUGE long list of all the control options. I scroll to Trackball X, then you hit enter and are supposed to type in what you want it to be. If it were a button I was configuring, I would type in the key on the keyboard that I want the button mapped to. But with a spinner or TB, what do I type in? There's actually 2 lines for each device, so it shows Trackball X, Trackball X, Trackball 2, Trackball 2, etc.  Same thing with the spinners.  I just don't know what to type in here. Would someone mind guiding me to get this turned on?
Thanks

Well, I go into the Tab Menu, configure input (genereal),
Wrong menu - although it might not work for me now b/c of Win2k.  Try the following:

Open Command prompt - navigate to MAME directory -  Run MAME (or MAME32 or MAMEAnalog32) with the -cc tag.

You will find a file in the emulator directory called <emulatorname>.ini.  Edit it to change the following lines:

### Input device options ###
mouse                   1

### Analog+ options ###
multiplemice            1
switchablemice          1
switchmiceaxes          1
splitmouseaxes          1

Restart MAME play a dual trackball game.  On the main TAB menu, you should see a mouse options setting. . .

ok- did that. NOW-
in the Tab menu- it gives options for Tackball X, Tackball X, Tackball Y, Tackball Y  AND-  Tackball X 2, Tackball X 2, Tackball Y 2, Tackball Y 2.

On the player 1 set- it has  set:
Trackball X - left arrow OR J1 X Axis +
Trackball X - right arrow OR J1 X Axis -
Trackball Y - left arrow OR J1 X Axis +
Trackball Y - left arrow OR J1 X Axis +

So- this seems to be working. When it comes to the Player 2 settings, it just has

Trackball X 2 - D
Trackball X 2 -  G
Trackball Y 2 - R
Trackball Y 2 - F

So there's nothing telling it to use the trackball settings- I assume is the J2 X Axis +, J2 X Axis -, J2 Y Axis +, J2 Y Axis -.  How do I type that stuff in there? It wont let me type it in, nor can I hit enter to modify it, and spin the trackball to get it to recognize it.   If I leave these settings as is- BOTH trackballs control 1 player, while nothing moves on the other player (I'm testing with Marble Madness- so only 1 marble moves, the other sits there- both TBs move the 1 player).

So, it seems to me that if I can get it to recognize the other TB movement, and configure it to recognize it, I'm all set. Any ideas on how to do this?
Thanks soo much bud!
D

You're still in the wrong menu -

The TAB (Inputs - This Game) menu is where you assign keys to the trackball if you didn't have one and wanted to use a joystick or keyboard.  You should be able to change it by pressing enter with the command highlighted, but you don't need to.

You need the TAB (Mouse settings) menu, but I can get it to come up for me either.

What version of Analog Plus?

tigerHeli got it right:
Wrong menu - although it might not work for me now b/c of Win2k.  Try the following:

Open Command prompt - navigate to MAME directory -  Run MAMEAnalog with the -cc tag.

You will find a file in the emulator directory called <emulatorname>.ini.  Edit it to change the following lines:

### Input device options ###
mouse                   1

### Analog+ options ###
multiplemice            1
switchablemice          0
switchmiceaxes          1
splitmouseaxes          1

Restart MAME play a dual trackball game.  On the main TAB menu, you should see a mouse options setting. . .

For mameAnalog32, you need to edit ini/mame32.ini instead of [emulatorname].ini, but otherwise the same.

I got it.  Dug through my old E-mails from Rebel and figured it out.

Woot.

Eyal8r,

I assume you are using the MAME 32 version of Analog Plus.

Do what I said, open a command prompt, navigate to the MAME32 folder.

Type "MAME32AnalogXP.exe -cc" and Enter.

Edit the C:\mame32\mame32analogXP.ini file as I said above.

Now the important part, COPY the file above to the C:\MAME32\INI folder.

Now when you start a trackball game, the Tab menu will have an option called "Mouse Axes"  Use this and the arrow keys to assign your mice to the appropriate player.

Woot!  (Did I already say Woot?)

sweet- I'll try this out, but first some more dumb question- just wanna make sure I'm doing this right here....

I go to command prompt, type that, it runs for a sec, then does nothing and brings me back to the command prompt. Right? So nothing REALLY happens here at this part?

Then, I can navigate to the Mame32 folder, open the ini file in notepad, edit everything to say 1 on what you said earlier, and move THAT file to the mame32/ini/ directory, restart mame?  Did I get this right?
Thanks

Nothing that you can see  "-cc" stands for -CreateConfig, so MAME runs, builds the .ini file, and exits back to the DOS prompt.  BTW, if you did this previously, the .ini file is already built and you don't have to do it again.

>Then, I can navigate to the Mame32 folder, open the ini file in notepad, edit >everything to say 1 on what you said earlier,

save the file . . .

> and move THAT file to the mame32/ini/ directory,

I would COPY, rather than MOVE, but I don't think it matters.

> restart mame?  Did I get this right?

WOO HOO!!!  This worked great!!!

Now- I am having problems with my spinners. I'm certain they're hooked up correctly and wired right. But I'm getting no response from them at all. I have 2 spinners- Model 3 running on Analog+ XP, w/ Optipac.  Mame isn't racognizing them at all. I wonder if it's also a config problem. I am testing with Arkanoid.  Any ideas?

I cannot thank you enough, guys!!!

FYI-
I soaked the ball bearings in WD40, then threw some 3in1 oil on them, and man those things fly!!!  Anyone having a tight TB problem- DO THIS NOW!
