What's the best way to mount the monitor smoked glass?
« on: December 12, 2004, 11:48:25 am »
Well, the only thing left on my cabinet is mounting the smoked glass that I bought around a year ago...  The problem is that I don't know whats the best way to mount it.

The way I see it, I have three possible options:

1) Mount blocks of wood on the sides of the cabinet and drill through the glass and into the blocks of wood... (this would show big screws on the glass and I would be very afraid of drilling through the glass so I don't really like this method I guess, however this would be the most sturdy).

2) Make a shelf underneath my control panel so when I place the glass on top of the monitor bezel, the bottom of the glass would rest of the shelf.  This way would work OK, but I'd be afraid of the glass moving around... (it wouldn't be very securely mounted...)

3) Use the remaining piece of my Happ's Marquee Retainer and mount it to the bottom of the control panel.  Hopefully the length of the glass would be perfect for it to fit over my monitor and then into the retainer...

I'm completely unsure what's the best way to go.  Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Not neccessarily the 'best' way, and it might not be possible on your cab but you can see how I did it in this thread:

It works great for me...

I did #1 but then I filled the extra space with sealant. The smoked glass in my cabinet is now a permenant part of the cabinet. Well... I guess I could take it out but I don't REALLY need to. I did it because i was too afraid to drill the glass.  I have no idea if what I did is advisable but It's been about 5months and no problems so far.

On my cab the top of the monitor glass rests against 2 wooden ledgers attached to the inside of the cabinet sides, the top of the pane of glass slides behind the speaker shelf and the bottom rests on a shelf behind the CP. The control panel is hinged and is locked in place with cabinet hinges that you can reach up and lock by sticking your arm up through the coin door. When it's locked in place, the CP itself holds the bottom of the pane of glass in place so it can't move around. This way you don't have to seal the glass in place, you can remove it to get to the monitor, but it's perfectly secure when the CP is secured.

Usually all you need is a "lip" at the bottom and your glass lies down on supports and the lip keeps it from sliding out. Glass is heavy. Gravity will keep it lying down and a couple clips here and there should keep it in place in case you need to move the whole cab.

Drilling holes through it??! Don't even think about it! (Risk of cracking, dangerous glass powder and shards can be breathed in or get in your skin...!)
NO MORE!!

I would have to Agree with Ray on this one. Best to install a wood strip that would hold the glass in place. You could probably also further secure the top/bottom with adhesive velcro...
