coin door lights in a JAMMA cab
« on: December 07, 2004, 11:26:22 pm »
So, I began dismantling my jamma cab to convert to a mame cab today.  I took out the whole jamma board and dismantled the control panel.  When I was done, I turned on the power for a moment to make sure I hadn't shut off power to the monitor, it came on fine. What I noticed is that the coin door lights no longer are operating. Is this normal?  If so, when I plug the jamma into my j-pac will they come on again?

Nope.

Nope.

Nope.  Run a line from a 12V off your power supply to the bulbs.

If your cabinet had the coin door lights wired to the existing game cabinet's power supply then likely you have one of those power supplies that must have a load (like a game board) connected to the +5 volt line in order to power up. Some power supplies need to have a load on the +5 volts in order to turn on the other voltages like the +12 volts.

Actually, Ken, what you probably don't know about the J-PAC is that although there are connections for the 12V on the board, they don't go anywhere.  So in order for his lights to light, he'll have to get power from another source.

its a happ coin door, so is it defiantely 12 volts?  Also, I noticed there is a power supply in the back of the cab that doesn't appear to have been used with the SF3 game that was it (I believe it was from the previous Primal Rage game), since there is no lines running to the 110V input, this can be removed correct?

Yeah, the lights are most likely 12V.

You just plug them in.  You have a ground comming off the power supply and a 12V (usually yellow, sometimes orange).  That powersupply might need a load like Ken said.

If you are taking out the power supply, it should be fine, but if you want to run 12V lights and things like that, just leave it in. You might want the extra supply instead of hacking into the computer power supply.

Bob Roberts has a diagram on his site and instructions on Jamma wiring with pictures.

It's probably the best description around on how a game is wired.

Actually, unless the arcade power supply is being used (ie 5v) then it should be disconnected from mains power, otherwise it'll burn out.

OK, so then i should not use the power supply if I am not using the 5V output from it?  Anythin else in my cab that would need 5V?

You shouldn't be using the arcade power supply; you should remove the mains power completely from it. Don't take it out of the cabinet, though. At some point you may find yourself with a JAMMA board and want to play it. Then it'll just  be a simple matter of hooking it back up and plugging in your JAMMA board.

No, get your +5v and +12v from your computer's power supply.  From a spare drive plug lead.
