Vector games that use a spinner with <= 2 buttons?
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:55:02 pm »
I picked up an empty Omega Race cab and thought I may try and MAME it into a vector cab.  Here's the list that I've found will work.

Omega Race
Zektor
Tempest
Tempest Tubes
Tac/Scan

Any I've missed?  Any I have included that won't work with my controls?  I pretty much cross referenced KLOV, SortInfo and Controls.dat to get this list.  I may end up throwing a couple of raster games in just to boost the amount of supported games.  Thanks all.

If you have a Mame32 install then just go to the page with the vector games and then sort by "trackball", all of those are spinner, except Quantum.

Sounds similar to what I'm doing with my Tempest cab.
MAME Projects % completed:
2004 3 sided cocktail cabinet w/ modular CP <25% (discarded)
2004 Tempest cabinet & CP > 75% (sold)
2017 Raspberry Pi Zero W w/ Lakka microconsole 50%
2021 Vertical Bartop - in progress > 80%, 100% functional (sleeping)

Thanks for the Mame32 direct link.  I'll check out your project and see what you have going on there.  Thanks again.

Looks like the only one I missed was Major Havoc.  All the others I don't think would work well with the controls I'm limited to.  6 vector games?  Is it worth it?

Have you seen the Multi-Williams Omega Mame thread? If not, then you should.

Also, why limit yourself to vector games?

Yeah, I've seen it.  Pretty sweet.  Since Omega Race was a vector game, I just thought it would be neat to put all vector games in it.  Of course it will just be a computer monitor and not a vector monitor.  I don't think I'll be getting my hands on one of those anytime soon.  I guess I could always change my mind in the future and put raster games on as well.  Then again, seems I have a lot of project plans but never get around to the project.  :-\

No need to limit yourself to vector if you aren't using a vector monitor.  :police:

Adding the normal spinner games will make it a worthwhile project.

I see so many Omega Races get parted out. It is like Omega Race and Gorf are the bastard children of the collecting scene. Really common, they were really popular back in the day, and they get parted out left and right these days.

If I had a color vector monitor I'd do that vectorMAME thing.  Oh, how sweet that would be.  You're probably right.  I just thought that vector games would look best on a computer monitor rather than an arcade monitor, and the raster games would look better on an arcade monitor than a computer monitor.  Ugh.. well, we'll see how everything goes.

If you're having trouble finding a vector monitor, you could always just buy an $18,000 laser projector and play them on the side of your house...  :)

Oddfeld, I've seen that before and thought it was pretty neat.  I like the idea they had about playing it on clouds. ^_^

Thanks for the info Paige, but I'm afraid I won't be spending TOO much more money until after Christmas.  I've already dropped more than I should have.  Is that a good price?  I would prefer a color vector monitor if I'm going to spend fat bank just for a monitor.  Maybe one of these days.  You never know what's in the wharehouse down the street from you.

That's a good price for a known good B/W monitor.  It's probably half what you'd pay for a color unit.

Well, getting a vector monitor will be another project for the future.  Maybe when I have broken even with the hobby and finished all the other projects on my list.  I have so many already.  ;D

The black and white monitors are more vectory then the color ones are. They are higher res too, much higher res, and they don't have a shadow mask like the color ones do.

Plus they are a lot more reliable.

I can honestly say that I've never had a vector monitor, but I just don't think that color vector games would look better on a black and white.

Oh, I didn't say they looked better. I just said a black and white vector monitor is more vectory and higher resolution.

Or to put it in different terms.

The difference between Asteroids on a computer monitor and Asteroids on a B&W vector is a lot bigger than the difference between Tempest on a computer monitor and Tempest on a color vector monitor.

Oh, I hear ya.  No way you can ever get the Asteroids shot on anything but a vector monitor.  It's awsome.

I can't think of any color games where color is an integral part of the game... can anyone else?
