im still confused on trackballs...

whats the cheapest way to interface one?

is it the ultrimarc trackball with the optipac encoder?

I am NOT skilled enough to hack into a mouse....but, just to add one trackball, there has to be a cheaper solution no?

If you're not ready to hack, your cheapest solution is a pre-hacked mouse from www.oscarcontrols.com.  The Opti-Pac lets you hook up multiple spinners and trackballs, but if you're just after the one ball, it's way too expensive.

A mouse hack is not in any way difficult. That's your best bet. If you feel comfortable enough with your skills to build your own arcade machine (and since you're here you must be) you won't have any problem hacking a mouse.
