Xbox mod
« on: November 28, 2004, 07:41:37 pm »
If you do an Xbox mod, how much space does the hard drive have available on it? Is it worth the mod if you don't put in a new hard drive right away? I am mainly looking to play music over a network and put Mame, NES and SNES games on it. In the future, I would like to add a hard drive but not until I can afford it. If there isn't much space on the hard drive that comes with it, it may not be worth it until I can get a new hard drive. What do you think? Thanks for any help.

Stock HDs are 8gb.Which is enough for mame, nes, snes and mp3 so yeah you should mod your xbox.
On another note, thanks again for that programed remote control.Still working great after like a year 8)

It is only an 8 gig?!? I have a 20gig lying around. Maybe I should use that just to be safe. I could maybe get a couple of games on there also ;)

Glad to hear it is still working. If for some reason you lose the programming, just send it to me and I will reprogram it. Thanks for the info.

im fairly certain the roms would have to be on the local drive though for the emulators.i dont think you cant call them from the network drive..anytime you run an .xbe it closes all connections..so id go with a larger drive, if not for that reason alone.

Yea, I just meant I wanted to play MP3's over the network. I figured a gig would be too much to transfer over the network to play. But as long as I can get Mame and a few other emu's ad 2-3 games, that should be good. I could rotate them then. So I think I will use the 20 gig drive. It sounds like it would work. Thanks for the info.

if all you want are a few roms, you don't even need the 20gig.  When everything is set up, your stock drive will have something like 4-6 gigs free (I can't remember).  That is PLENTY of space for some mame, nes, snes, etc roms.

Of course, the 20gig is probably worth putting in anyway, but I just figured I'd mention it.
first off your and idiot

READ THIS

If you EVER plan on playing on xbox live again after modding your xbox, listen to me VERY VERY carefully.

MS has been banning people extremely quickly from XBOX-Live.
The following two situations seem to be causing it, besides logging on with a chip enabled:

A) User logged onto XBOX Live with original HD, changed HD, then logged on to xbox live again -- Banned

B) User puts alternative dashboard on origina xbox hard drive or has unsigned apps on xbox hard drive and logs on to xbox live -- Banned.

(Before I get flames like "j00 1z 14m3. 1 10g on 3v3ry d4y. j00 r n07 l33t", go to www.xbox-scene.com to read more).

There is something called the Xtender mod: www.teamxtender.com that allows you to install up to 3 hard drives in your xbox (it extends the case upward by a few inches).

If you ever plan on playing on live again, you have 2 choices:

A) every time you log onto live, remove your new larger hard drive, install older hard drive, turn off chip, log on.

B) Turn off chip, turn off xbox, click "1" button on xtender mod, play halo2 on live.

Your best bet to be safe w/ your xbox and live is to do the following:

1: NEVER use your original hard drive for anything other than original XBOX games and authorized xbox software.
2: NEVER even boot to your original HD with modchip on.

The best thing about the xteneder mod too, is that you can put 2 120gig hd's in there, use one for roms/games, and use one for media/videos/whatever you want.

Note: if you leave your original HD in there, and want to play on live, you can't have larger than a 120 gig HD on each channel.  The original MS Bios doesn't like drives on the IDE chain that large, and will fail to boot, period, if you have a drive larger than 250gig on it.  I have tried this with a 250gb drive that numerous people were able to lock after replacing their originals, it didn't work with that drive either.

This should help you avoid headaches.

If you've already put crap on your original drive, then hopefully, when installing your alternative dash, you made a backup of your original hard drive like you were told to in the docs for whatever dash you installed.  If so, just revert it back to its original state.  If you didn't, there are tools like Slayers EvoX Autoinstaller and others that will allow you to revert your HD back to an original state.

Thanks for the info. Actually my Xbox won't connect to Xbox live. I called when I first got it and they said I would have to send it to them to get it fixed. I don't think I would pay for live anyway so at that point I decided to skip it so live isn't a problem for me. I just use xbconnect anyway to play people I know. I know Live can be cool but I am just not a big multiplayer kind of guy. I mean I like to play multiplayer but only with people I know that suck as much as I do. Thanks again for the info. I think I will do it and just put the 20 gig drive in there that I already have.

Meh..I have evo-x installed..LOTS of unsigned codes,prOn,many other thangs and still not banned.Cuz I copied EVERYTHING I had on my stock HD including epprom, serial, etc so my new 120gb acts like a stock HD and they cant detect my mod cuz its never activated unless I hold the power button for 2 seconds when booting my box.

Bill got nothing on me ;D

if you must play on xbox live another solution would be to have two xboxes one modchipped and the other not chipped. expensive but would be a solution!

i'm waiting for xbconnect to evolve into a feasible alternative to xbox live

My whole other reason for suggesting using the stock HD, is that MS is continually developing new ways to detect mods.  And being that there's no legitimate version of the xbox with a HD size over 10 gigs, how long till they go hmm, 120 gigs huh? BANNED.  The code to check for HD size is not very complex.

Well, I went out and got a 160gig Segate drive for the xbox. I am now in the process of ordering my chip. I have decided to go with the xecuter3 mod chip as a friend of mine got one and it rocked. Built in ftp and http flashing is a plus. I cannot wait until I get it. Thanks for the help guys.
