Quick disconnects question -- hot glue..?
« on: September 28, 2002, 12:30:42 am »
I'm currently making the d-sub 'quick disconnects' for my control panels and was wondering if it is acceptable to encase the wiring inside the hood with hot glue..? The metal clamps inside my DB-15s won't fit around all the wires since they're packed and I want to provide some kind of extra support/spacing for the bare parts of the wires.. I seem to remember that this is the way some manufacture d-subs, but I'm not for sure.. in the least, the hot glue shouldn't conduct/cause a short, right?  ???

What about cable ties?

Glue wont cause a short, as its non-conductive - and your not using high current.

If you glue... just remember that its hard to impossible to remove... so make the wires long enough that you could cut them later, and still have the reach.

Hm.. I wonder if the cable tie would fit inside the hood..  ???

That would likely be better, though; I'd hate to have to [completely] re-do ANY of these damn things.. my main concern is the scant sections of bare wiring by the solder cups getting crossed.. but it shouldn't be an issue.

Just screw that thing together.  I have fit 26conductor cable into a db15 hood, you just have to be persistant!  ;)

btw, I have also stabbed my hand with the screwdriver while doing this.  you don't want to do that!

but there has NEVER been a time where I couldn't get that thing screwed closed (It did take me 30min once though)

I have done that before.  Just make sure the wires are hooked where you want them!  No backing out of it once you have laid the glue to it.

Yeah, hot glue is tricky...  I've learned to use just enough to get the job done, but still be removable if need be.  The first Dual Strike hacks I did for my T2 guns, I actually just wanted to hot-glue thru the screw holes on the boards, to pin them down by the corners inside the guns themselves.  It didn't seem like any glue was coming out, until I realized I was pumping glue in underneath the boards!  Now the whole board is permanently welded to the inside of the gun...  :'(  Hopefully, I'll never need to replace it, but if I do, I'll just have to live with a dead board cemented inside...

If you're going to use the glue, I'd suggest just putting a drop in between each crimped pin, rather than flooding the whole thing with gobs and gobs of it!  That way, you can still pick the stuff out with a screwdriver if need be.
