Joysticks
« on: November 25, 2004, 02:29:38 am »
Hi guys-
I am about ready to order my parts, and have a few joystick questions...

I am planning on a 4 player CP, with also a spinner and TB, flightstick and another 4way for Qbert. Question...

If I am going with the Ultimarc T-Stick Plus for my 1 & 2 player sticks, do I need the E-Stick for playing Q-Bert mounted up above those? Or, can I just mount a standard, 4 way joystick at an angle to save some cash? Since the T-Sticks are switchable 4/8 ways, can't I use the 1 & 2 player positions for any 4-way games (Pac Man, DK, etc) and just switch them to a 4 way mode when its time to use it, and have the 'Q-Bert' stick mounted at an angle permanently- since I'll never have to switch it back to a 'normal' 4 way mode? Is this possible and making sense?  Or, should I just shell out the extra cash, get the Ultimarc E-Stick AND the (2) T-Stick Plus' as well?

Next question- for players 3 & 4, I don't need anything special, just a standard 8-way, right? I only need 4 buttons on those positions as well, right?
Thanks!
D

Everything you are thinking is correct.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Thanks bud- just so I am clear tho, I can mount a STANDARD 4-way stick at a 45 degree angle and it'll work fine for Q-Bert and whatnot?
Thanks again

Use the T-stik in 8-way mode for Q*Bert.
The square restrictor on it makes it feel just like a rotated 4-way stick.
The only "whatnot" that uses a rotated stick like Q*Bert is Congo Bongo.

Another question about the E-Stick if you don't mind...

I can seem to figure out how to get mine separated in order to mount it. The threaded top portion seems to have some kind of stop that is not allowing it to unthread. I don't want to force it incase I break something.

What am I missing here?

Hey dude- thanks for the reply. Question tho- if it's in 8-way mode, won't it mess up and accidentally go over to say, the direct right instead of down/right? Don't I need it at 4 way mode but also at an angle?

If not, then, do I even need a 4way at all? Can't I just use the t-sticks for this?  Now I'm confused...
Thanks!

I put up a post awhile back about how to set a T-stik (in 8-way mode) to play Q*Bert.

Basically, you use UP+LEFT for Up, UP+RIGHT for Right, DOWN+RIGHT for Down, and DOWN+LEFT for Left.
When you are setting up the game specific keys in Q*Bert, go to Up, hit enter, and then move the stick to the upper left corner.
You should see Up=Up AND Left when they are set right.

Once you get it all set up this way, it won't send ANY signals until it has two inputs pressed (hits a corner), then it will send the input that you preset for that corner.
With the square restrictor on the T-stik, the feel of the stick movement will be just like a rotated 4-way.
The stick will slide naturally to the corners, giving a 45-degree diamond feel.

Cool!  So if I'm reading this right- I DO NOT need the E-Stick at all, right? I can just use the existing T-Sticks in 8 way mode? That makes sense.  Now- what's the deal with Congo Bongo?  How is that setup and what do I need to do? Can I do the same- use the existing T-Sticks for this?  Or, do I need the E-Stick or other stick mounted at a 45 degree angle?
Thanks
