Need suggestions for cabinet sides finish...
« on: September 27, 2002, 10:51:33 am »
Hi everybody,

i just bought an old arkanoid cab with a wood grain finish. I want to get rid of that so I need to cover it somehow. Any suggestions on what to do?

I had a suggestion of using car stripping material (36" rolls) and covering the sides.

There's also sanding/painting but I don't think I want to get into the mess of sanding the whole thing.

Suggestions are MORE than welcome :)

Marc

If you want to hide the grain without using a filler-primer and sanding I'd say using a laminate would be your best bet

Its actually not......... Laminate to bare wood, not on top of paper laminate! You've just stuck your expensive laminate to paper... NOT a good option.

If you want to do it on the cheap I'd say prime and paint. Mess or not though, theres really no substitute for a good old fashioned stripping. Sorry. :) With just paint you'll still see the woodgrain through the paint. I've had this happen with a cheap shelf I've painted before. Its not neccesarily a bad look, but be warned it will peek through.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

The cabinet that I converted is an old Taito, that mighta been an arcanoid cabinet... It had a faux woodgrain laminate.

I pried off the laminate (it was in so -so shape)... unfortunately my site is down or I could show you my cabinet, and pictures during the removal process...

I'd recommend if you hated the woodgrain and it is laminate... to strip it (I just used a putty knife... but a heat gun woulda helped loosen the contact cement) and relaminate it...

I had so so results sanding it after removing the laminate, priming with tinted primer and painting semi gloss black...

*EDIT* ha... I'm back in action my temporary site depicting turning and old Taito cab into ubercade
