Wico ball top size?
« on: November 24, 2004, 07:12:24 pm »
This is a tough one to search for so I'm hoping someone knows
I would preferably like a balltop joystick that is the same size (ball part...like diameter) as the ones used on X-Men and Simpsons and Konami games like that. I was thinking of getting RandyT's and here's what he had to say about it
"As for size, the only ones currently available are 1 3/8" which are very close to that of the original PacMan games.  I'm afraid you need to do some research on the titles you mention to see if they are similar."

Is this the correct size?
And on eBay they sometimes sell NOS wico (how do I know if it's the real deal?), if I bought one of those, is it probably going to be the diameter I'm looking for?

Thanks

I don't have my calipers handy, but my Wico's are somewhere right between 1-1/2" and 1-9/16".

Watch out for the "wico-style" joystick auctions.
Those are the cheap knock-off ones.

As far as the others go, it's a bit hit-or-miss.
If they say Wico (without the -style) in the title, you're probably OK, but it's hard to tell by the pictures alone.
If you go by that rule though, you will miss alot of auctions that are titled things like "old leafswitch sticks", and "old original joystick", etc...

You will also find a lot of them on control panels and such.  Like this one.

If you can't tell clearly from the pictures posted on ebay weather it is a wico or not ask the seller for some better pictures.

And if the leaf switches screw on then it is a knock off.

They also have microswitch wico sticks of the same type, which further confuses the issue.

Hey Paige are you sure all of those auctions you listed have actuall wico's?

Did you ask this guy if they were wico's or ask to see a picture of the underside of the panel?  Just because they have a ball doesn't allways make them a wico.  Last time you gave me some links to some wico joysticks I asked the sellers for some pictures and info and it turned out like half of them weren't acutall wico's.

And didn't you say the kind that have the screw on Leaf Switches were just knockoff joysticks?

Ooops, on the last one you are dead right. I have just never seen the knock offs as anything other than new. Wasn't even looking for them in an auction for used sticks.

As for the High Impact control panel.

I can pretty much promise it. The High Impact kit came with 2 blue wicos and 2 red wicos. Everyone I have ever seen has Wicos, including the one in my game room.

Sometimes knowing what stick came with what games makes it easier to hunt them down. The odds of a High Impact having the wrong sticks that were the correct color and had the correct look are very slim.

As for past links. You are aware that there are 3 major distinct versions of the wico base, not all of them look exactly alike.

And that is just 3 versions that I can verify, since I own them. There are also color variations, and some minor variations among the main types.

The parts all interchange though.

Yes I was aware.

Thanks for your help though.  It is appreciated.   :)
