Looking for sticks, buttons, IPAC, etc..
« on: September 25, 2002, 04:21:22 pm »
I'm about to begin tinkering with a project cab...something small and relatively simple...anyone have spares they'd like to get rid of?  I'm trying to do this first "starter" project on the cheap, but not go totally cheap and try to hack out a gamepad or whatever....

LMK what you have, perhaps I can use it! :D
Thanks!

out of curiousity... what's yer budget for this smaller cab?

What's the layout  (i.e. is it a single player or two player cab?)    Ya might be able to get away with a gamepad sidewinder/power mite hack if it's a 1 player control...

I picked up my buttons   from x-arcade (albeit through ebay) I ended up getting 20 black buttons and 2 super-esque clone  8way joysticks for 20 bucks plus shipping....

They sell em direct here

You can get sidewinders for like 5 - 10 beans... I think I paid more for wire/terminal blocks/crimps than I did for joystic/buttons/interface (ok not really but it seems like that)

I don't think I have anything left over  that I can spare...

Good luck!

Hey Thanks Rampy.  Yeah, the smaller mini-cab-dunno-but-I'll-figure-something-out cab/coctail/desktop thing is going to be my practice box.  I'll make it small,
with the Pro-200 I was talking about in my other thread.

As much as I would like to save a few bones hacking a pad, I think I'd like to go with the basic IPAC because thats what I plan on using in the larger cab.  Spend a few bones to make it easier on myself than hacking a pad.

.....on the other hand.........I could pick up a cheap joyport sidewinder (I have a USB one but the Pro doesn't have USB Ports....I could add a USB PCI card of course but I'm not sure which would be more practical)....hmmm.

Is that X-arcade link you sent me for 8 way joysticks and switches, along with the buttons (switches on them? HOrzontal?)  I suppose I could also go check out therealbobroberts.com and pick up something there.

Hey thanks for all the replies!
I appreciate it...

Oh Sorry...Didn't mean to ignore your post!

Actually I just picked up a couple of the x-arcade sticks he mentioned so I'm good there, unless one of your joysticks is a 4 way....

As for the buttons, I'm just going to pick up a few of the ones from Happs since they're cheap and I dont need a ton of them right away, what kind are yours?

I could use the ones that have horizontal microswitches...I'm not sure of the orientation of the ones on the X-arcade site....

thanks!

The x-arcade buttons are horizontal... they have generic microswitches i.e. NOT cherry (not that I currently can tell the difference)...

I think they are a little shorter than happs horizontals.  They are about 1inch of thread space, so they'll fit nicely on a 3/4" thick control panel, but I'm I little concerned that it would be tough clearance wise (without routeing) with lexan ontop of the 3/4" ...  (plug you can see a blurry shot or two of the buttons/joys on my halfassed photogallery/project page HERE

These are kinda my practice buttons too, till I get around to getting fun multicolored ones and player 1 /2stick figure buttons (they are all black from x-arcade) .  I may go with 5/8" mdf  on my control panel only in order to accomodate a little more room.

Please be advised that Happs has a 25 dollar minimum order, so it can be a pain in the ass if you just want to order a handful of buttons or just a trackball plate, etc...

BTW I'd only do the sidewinder gamepad/other usb contorller hack if you are really tight on budget.  I think it makes sense to save the headache and invest in a ipac now and just move it to your bigger, non prototype cabinet...   On my cabinet, I'm using 2x sidewinder gameport style for now, but eventually I'll cut over to an ipac.  But for like 14 bucks after shipping and an investment in time to hack them, I couldn't beat the sidewinders for a poor man's interface (well there's always a keyboard hack, but that's a different holy war in itself :)

Good luck...
