Ultimarc trackball and mousehack?
« on: November 20, 2004, 07:54:06 pm »
Has anyone been successful setting up the ultimarc trackball with a mouse hack.  I tried setting it up with a microsoft ps/2 mouse and could not get it to work.  The mouse is sending 5 volts to the trackball and I have all the wires hooked to the proper locations but I can not get any movement?  I know the mouse board is good and that the computer has recognized it.

i would try obtaining your power from a open connector on your power supply

I just posted a similar question a couple hours ago. I am also having issues though I think it is due to my solder or soldering of the connections.  I temporarily spliced the power and ground directly to the power supply and held the green and yellow wires to the sensor contacts and i could get it to work.  However, after I removed the sensor component and tried to solder my wires I could not get it to work.  I think I have either the wrong kind of solder or i messed up the holes where I am putting the wires through.  It can work though, but i need to find me a couple more mice to tear apart...already went through 2.

I had trouble finding where to attach the ground wire so thats why i decided to go directly from the power supply.  Do you have the ground attached to the mouse as well?

Is you mouse board from an optical mouse?

Not 100% sure because I've never tried to use optical circuits with a mouse board but I'd be willing to bet that you can't use a mechanical mouse board.

Some of the Ultimarc trackballs have a pull up resistor on the optic board.
This is for compatibility with the minipac. You might want to email Andy and
ask how to remove that mod, if your trackball has it.
(He sells 2 different models of trackball)

Later,

I actually ordered the non-minipac trackball.  I have used a mouse hack with a happs trackball before and it worked fine.  I assumed the ultimarc ball would hook up the same but so far I haven't had any luck.
Crashball, I grounded everything to the ground pin on one of the button switches.

I had trouble doing this, but (the problem was) I wasn't using pull up resistors.

This might help:
