14" touchscreens in dfw
« on: November 19, 2004, 08:22:58 pm »
sorry i wasn't able to post this while it was still active but i just got in under the gun on these before the auction ended.  i bought two but there were two that didn't sell.  maybe you could contact the seller directly about the other two?  i got mine for $20 each plus shipping but they allow pick up during the week if you're in the area.

now to whip up some plans for a juke or two :)

Hey, I ordered one (on the auction before that one) and just got it.

when you get it, it uses ELO touchscreen drivers and works pretty good

I got it 1024x768 interlaced, 800x600x100hz and 640x480x100hz.... But 640x480 was the only one I got it really centered right..  I haven't played for more then 10 minutes though.

But other then that, it seems to work GREAT!

I am the one who is bidding the one currently up for auction, unsure if they have any more.

I was going to try & pick that one up...
Oh well...
I won't bid against a fellow BYOACer.

Good luck!

I won the latest auction.  Sorry Paige, I didn't see your name on the auction and hadn't seen this thread.

I was thinking of a jukebox/casino game machine.  My wife love video poker and the like.  The only mame poker games I've noticed tend to be adult (sexy) themed games.  Anyone have any suggestions for mame casino games or alternately, off the shelf casino software, like the hoyle games?

Lilwolf - any suggestions on operating it, beyond what you've already said?  How finicking is the touch response?

I don't have it hooked up to a computer yet.  I jsut plugged it in to test.

The software seems really good (ELO serial drivers).  You can click on press, release or maybe others.  but seems pretty good for that.

I haven't figured out the software yet.  Just basic.  I was going to do a MP3 player only... then decided I might add a few items (area51 with cheats and noreload?  any others) but I haven't heard of any good touch screen poker games out there.  Any emulated?

I'm hoping to start playing with it in the next week.  I lent my computer to a friend and waiting until he gets a new computer before I take it back...   Then I can give more info.

If you have a touchscreen then there is an entire world of freeware shovelware mouse games at your disposal.

The derogatory computer jargon term shovelware refers to software noted more for the quantity of what is included than for the quality or usefulness.

This is commonly used to describe software on CD-ROMs, whose large capacity inspires producers to fill them with useless clutter without regard to integration issues or usability so they can advertise the comprehensiveness of the product.

The term is coined with semantic analogy to "freeware", "shareware", etc. Rather than hand-picking software and carefully placing it in the collection, the analogy goes, the publisher has indiscriminately "shoveled" the software on to the CD. Hence, shovelware.

Basically go get yrself a $2 CDROM called 500 games for windows 95 or something like that, and then load them on up.

I wish I had seen this earlier... it would be a lot easier to troubleshoot WinCab's touchscreen problems if I actually had a touchscreen... oh, well...

The monitor came very well packed.  I've finally hooked it up and at 640x480 it is a very nice picture.  I hope to pick up a serial cable this weekend and give the touch screen a try.

Woo hoo!
He put up a few more for auction... It just ended.
I go 2 of them... Table tops here I come!
I've got one little kiosk station that one of these might work well in, but it may be a bit small for it... I might just build 1 table-top & 1 mini cabinet...

Anhow, I've got to finish putting together my full-size first... Just need to actually hook up my new Jamma harness & get some art for the Marquee & CP.

They have eight up in two different auctions now...

It's too bad this is coming around Christmas... I wish I could get one to test DOSCab/WinCab with, but I'm wiped out... :(  If he still has them in February, I'll snag one...

Ok guys, I just bought one of these.
Seems like it would make a cool jukebox in a small cabinet.
Maybe similar to the on-location ATMs you see in bars and such?
Anyway, can anyone tell me what to expect to pay for the serial cable?
I hope it's not more than the shipped monitor, but that's life I guess

I was thinking about making my own Megatouch type machine with one of these. Does anyone know where I can get a list of software that works well on a touch screen? I've googled and googled but haven't been able to find anything. Thanks.

Just got mine today. Opened it and the screen is busted. No damage to the box or insulation. The video cable end was smushed against the screen inside the packing so I guess it got jarred just right. Anyways, I put a call into FMI and waiting on a response. :(

Would it be possible for anyone that has one of these to post pics of the monitor in action?  Preferably at various resolutions.  Can anyone tell me what the possible resolutions are for this monitor?

Thanks in advance,

I'm not sure what you want to see.  I'd be just a picture of the windows desktop.  I don't know how you'd see the touchscreen in action, unless someone shot video.

I've been very busy family-wise and my camera is loaned out right now.  I've only had it at the one resolution (need a decent pc to hook up).  It looks very good and the touch works well.  I even bought a second one which is sitting in the box until I get some more time.

What did you want to see/know?

Looking back, the use of "in action" was the wrong use of words.  :P

Definitely don't need video of someone using the touchscreen.  A picture of the desktop at a couple of different resolutions would be awesome.  I was actually thinking of using this for a touchscreen jukebox along with SalmonKing's "SK Jukebox" program.  I guess I'm wondering what, that program in particular, would look like on these monitors.  If anyone has this monitor and is running the program, I would love to see what it looks like.  I'm not sure if this monitor will be able to display smallish text and the album cover graphics clearly enough.

Thanks,
- Bill

Touchscreen monitors look EXACTLY like normal monitors. Some are even higher res than normal. We have a 15" one at work that does 1280x1024

I realize they look like a normal monitor.  The only reason I was hoping to see some pics, is I don't remember seeing or finding any specs (ie. what resolutions it could handle) on these.

I'm glad you were able to get the pics you wanted.  When I get myself together, I'll try and get you some more.  It's really a great little unit.  I'm hoping to put together a juke with it myself.  Let me know how it goes for you.

don't have any photos (but the ones on the ebay auction are what they look like).

but take note.  these are NOT normal monitors.  They ONLY look good at 640x480.  All other resolutions have bad fishbowl effects and you can't really set them.

Don't buy these unless you are ok with 640x480.  You WILL be happy with that resolutions abilities... none of the others.

also 1024x768 only in interlaced mode (43hz I think)

With the two I bought, one is going in an antique console stereo conversion to juke, the other probably a tabletop cab.  What are some good games to put in one of those?

liliwolf - what exactly do you mean by fishbowl effects?  i set mine up quickly to make sure it worked and got a good picture at 800x600 and 60Hz.  it didn't quite fit the whole screen horizontally but it looked good.  of course, i only displayed the desktop.  i was using my roomates computer which wouldn't let me set the display at 640x480 to compare.

also, has anyone who has one of these monitors tried to remove the any of the metal casing to reduce weight?  if so, how difficult was that?

thanks

I built a juke using just the touchscreen portion (ditched the crt) when you mount a similarly sized laptop in behind and voila thin touchscreen at a fraction of the cost (assuming you have an old laptop  :D)  it works great!  I posted some (unfinished) pics over in the "show us your jukes" thread under jukebox if you wanna have a look.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

I had one working, was going to mount it in the wall, since my basement isn't finished yet.  Perfect time.

Moved it to it's location, powered it on, went out for lunch, came back, it won't power on anymore.
