1 7/8 inches sound like about the same size as a logitech marble mouse.

Kind of small unless you have a very limited space. I put a marble mouse into my panel, mostly for OS navigation.

It works fine for some games.

USB Translucent Trackball

$14.95
That is a MacAlly trackball.  It's a pretty nice unit for windows navigation, not so good for arcade games.

I bought a couple of cheap USB PC trackballs to get me by.  They work but not great.  I would expect this to be a little better but not much.

For mousing around it's probably fine.  For gaming use, you probably want at least the Ultimarc 2-1/4 inch trackball, or the Happ or Betson 3-inch.
