Random coin insertions
« on: November 19, 2004, 11:48:44 am »
I have been having problems with random coin insertions with my Taito Egret Cab.this typically results in a coin insertion error that crashes my game..
when i played thru my PC this problem never existed.
however when i use the J-pac through my cab i get random coin insertions particularly on my japaense cave/treasure/raizing/8ing etc titls..
i thought it was simply a bad connection somewhere in the jamma harness or a short somewhere.
but last nite i set my cab up playing ghouls and ghosts and a few other titles of that time and i had no random inserts.
its odd..
any ideas?
it seems title specific

thanks

Minwah had a similar problem recently.  Could you be getting "light pollution"?  Or some other electro-magnetic interference?

no its not that..
and its not a loose connection..ive shaken every inch of the harness and i cant induce it..
i was thinking perhaps im getting a symapthetic chagre building up somewhere, but he rate of saturation is too high cause the number of insertions over 5-10 minutes is enough to cause most games to crash..the game simply stops and the coin slot 1 error comes up..whats so odd is thats it appears game specific.

Freaking strange.

A work around is to just change the credit method for those specific games to a CP button.

I dunno man... between this and your other thread it seems like your cab doesn't like you...  :o

What always seems to work for me when I encounter problems like this is to do the following:

1 - Open your hand
2 - Move swiftly towards a side of the offending machine
3 - Strike hard.
4 - Repeat, several times, if necessary.
5 - If this doesn't seem to be working, replace hand with foot

While this may not solve your problem, I can guarantee it'll make you feel better  ;D

i had a link to another egret owners site ,and i swear there was a write up on the same problem on his site, but ill be damned if i can find the link or the site..
im certain even the term "random coin insertions "was used, but becuase its such a low travelled site, googling that term has yielded nothing..
ive gotta figure this out , or else im gonna have to rip the whole thing apart and supergun it on my floor..

If you are using the switches with the wire for detecting the coins make sure that you have hooked up the NO tab (normally open) to the interface and the ground to the COM tab (common).

Ive went so far as to completely remove the switches from the coin mech and electrical tape the wire ends..
It still does it...

Try deleting the .CFG file for each game that is doing this, and reconfigure MAME for the J-PAC.    Make sure that coin inputs are not improperly mapped as the same keys that are used for gameplay.

You might also try opening a word processor or text editor and press your controls, and see if each correspond to the correct key mappings, and if there is some pattern via keys pressed, to the coin insertion key (which in most cases maps 5).

the coins insertions occur without playing...
all you have to do is load a game and go get a soda or something ,by the time you come back , it will be waiting for you to press player 1 start..

If this is occurring on only specific games, do you have those games set on free play?

negative. no free play...

if it wasnt game specific i would say its the jpac.
as these symptoms dont manifest themselves when i play on my PC on my normal comuter monitor.
however the same games played thru the j-pac on my cabinet do.
but the fact that its title specific is what makes it so bizzarre..

when using a computer only ,the only way to insert a coin is with the "6" button..
but when you use a jpac a coin can be inserted by using the previous method AND/OR by pressing and holding the "Player 1 start"(jpac alt) button and the"P1 button 1".
clearly the problem is with this bind. as it doesnt exist when using just the pc.
perhaps if i remove all the alt(player 1 start) combo binds that are associated with the jpac it will go away..
