Unmoded Dual Strike as yoke alternative
« on: September 24, 2002, 03:59:16 pm »
I haven't seen this discussed before.  Lots of discussion about yokes lately, including twisty grip and 1Up's dual strike hack http://www.1uparcade.com/project-swyoke.html

I'm still waiting for my ebay purchased yoke to arrive so I can "dual strike" it.  In the meantime, however the dual strike sidewinder arrived and I took it for a test drive.  While it certainly isn't a equal replacement for a cabinet yoke, it seems to me like the best available alternative.  Having played Star Wars, S.T.U.N. Runner and a bunch of driving games without having a yoke, or even a wheel, I've tried joys, mice, trackballs and keyboard and never even come close to being satisfied.  As soon as I plugged in the dual strike the difference was amazing.  I'd rather have a real yoke, but the thing was pretty good.  I was able to finally play these games for fun, instead of just to remind myself what they look like.
I don't want to start a run on the market, but if you like yoke games, or even just flight and driving games, the Dual Strike is a very affordable out of the box solution.

Yeah, the DS is really good for driving / shooting especially!  I can't believe it's not being made anymore...  I've hacked all mine, but I'm thinking of getting one more for playing FPS games on my PC.  It's one flaw is the D-pad.  It tends to be unresponsive, blame bad design.  They built it as a single plastic shaft surrounded by switches which are pressed against it.  It's very hard to hit the corners that way, and sometimes even UDLR are unresponsive.  Should've gone with the traditional Nintendo cross plus membrane switches...
