Windows XP Home edition for sale...
« on: November 15, 2004, 08:25:27 pm »
Ebay just canceled my auction for an OEM copy of Windows XP home that I was forced into buying with my Dell computer and just want to recoup some money for it.

I'll offer it to the board before I fight Ebay to allow me to sell it.   Brand new OEM copy of XP Home, Dell CD, with COA, product Key, etc.  I'll even throw in an XP SP2 Cd that I got from Microsoft, they're free from Microsoft but at least this will save you the trouble of ordering or downloading SP2.

first $60 takes it (I'll consider trades too I guess (arcade stuff and gun related stuff always work well for trades with me).

  Let me know...

Is it a generic OEM or does the book say something like "For use with Dell systems only?"

There is a Dell stamp on the manual cover, but a big white label is covering most of it.  It does look like it says something like you mentioned though, I can make out DELL and PC only, so it must say that.

Do you feel that had something to do with the auction being removed?  Why shouldn't I be able to seel it on Ebay in that case?  I was forced into buying it from Dell as they didn't offer a machine without an operating system on it, the way I wanted it.

Thats a non transferable disk. It is also already installed on your PC. Even if you reformat it its still against the TOS. Just because dell doesnt sell thier computers w/o operating systems doesnt give you the autoatic right to sell any part you were "forced it buy".

I never agreed to any TOS though, I never started the computer up with XP on it.  The first thing I did after opening the box was boot linux and install that.  I peeled off the COA sticker and stuck it to the front cover of the manual to keep it all together to sell to someone that could use it, as I can't use it.

In any case, if it's illegal for me to sell this package, why are there 186 other Ebay auctions for XP OEM editions?

I was going to offer the sale of a Dell computer and you get the OEM package free with it, but they'd have to ship in separate packages.  Shipping and handling would be $1,000USD for the Dell computer system and $6.00 for the OEM cd package.
The buyer can always tell me they don't want the computer system hardware and I'll dispose of it on my end to save them the shipping costs....

I don't want to sound like I'm picking a fight, please don't take it that way, I'm not.  I just feel that it sucks to be stuck with this thing that I was forced into buying and now I can't even sell....  This sounds like the exact reason that I avoid shopping at Wal-mart whenever possible, and I'm doing a good job at not shopping at wally-world too... I don't want this to happen with Dell and Microsoft.... but it is pretty close....  ugh

You have to sell an OEM version of windows WITH a computer. Easy to do if you have an old 386 in the closet.

BUT, I seem to recall reading something about the OEM dell versions of XP only working on dell computers, or being keyed to the motherboard type that was on the model they shipped with, or something gay like that.

This whole thing just plain old sucks in my eyes....

I think maybe I'll take my Oxy-Mapp gas torch to it and tape the while thing.... then send that to Ebay headquarters along with a copy to Dell and Microsoft as well.

Maybe I'll put it on a cup or so of IMR4198 smokeless powder, and light it with a cannon fuse, tape rolling of course.... then post that MPG on my web site....

I'm just bitter about the whole freakin' thing, can't you tell?  :)

oh well, if anyone wants it, make me an offer.... otherwise it'll sit on the shelf and gather dust for ever and ever and ever.....

It doesn't suck as much as you think, as MS only charges dell like $20 or $30 for XP home, it is not the same as paying $200 for the full retail version and being stuck with that.

I would just give it away to a relative.

Legalities aside, the oem disks from dell that I've seen before will only install on a computer with a dell motherboard.

That's probably what I'll do...  it still sucks though, the auction removal message made me feel like a criminal to boot....

I'll get over it, that I know ;-)

It's funny though, how come these big "powersellers" are still allowed to sell the OEM stuff and I'm not?  Damn big business...damn government....DAMN THE MAN!!!!!
Don't mind me, I'm just venting.... If I was back in my teens I'd just simply spark up a big old joint and forget all about it, listening to Sabbath, Floyd, Zeppelin, maybe some early Motley Crue, some Creadence, with my old buddies sitting at the park, not a care in the world, except where my next 5 bucks for gas is gunna come from until next payday from my parttime job at the local supermarket (Fernandes, for those that might be in the New England area), too bad my '76 Camaro only gets like 4 MPG on a really good day, but who cares it's one of the fastest car around....  to be 17 - 18 again...half a lifetime ago now....

but right now I'm gunna play doom3 for a bit... or maybe some Tron on my cab.... nah Doom 3 ;-)  Kids are in bed, the Wife's crafting with yarn... I have a half hour before I start feeling like I should "be in bed by now"....

Sorry about the memory lane deal.... I feel better now, a lot better now ;-)

Some OEM you can sell but you must sell it with hardware...so Most people sell the OEM disk along with a very old piece of broken RAM.

Wow, this got some replies quick.  Anyway, I was curious because I figured it was like the version that came with my laptop.  I already had XP Pro and wanted to use it and give my sister the XP Home that came with it.  But like Snarbald already said, they only install on Dell systems.  Sucks but at least you have a legal, extra copy of Windows.

I have a purple xp dell cd oem version that I once bought off ebay, the seller did not tell me it was a dell cd and did not give me the coa with it. Windows installed on my computer that I built just fine. Actually it is on the computer I am using right now. I called microsoft and told them my situation and they issued me a key for windows at no charge.
