Woodpecker Update
« on: November 12, 2004, 07:53:37 pm »
Guru has an update on his website.  It seems he was able to get the Woodpecker ROMs from the board I sent him!  Woodpecker was added to MAME 0.88u4!

I have now officially made my contribution to the cause!  Now to go find 0.88u4...

For those that don't remember, a friend of mine had this Woodpecker in a generic cabinet in his Mom's basement for the last 20 years.  It hasn't worked for a while, so he asked me to mame the cabinet.  I got to keep the board and couldn't understand why I couldn't find it in MAME.  When I mentioned it here, I was contacted by the 'authorites' who asked me to send it off to Guru.  Needless to say, he worked his magic and another game is added to the list!

Do you have any screenshots of the game. I can't really remember this game...

BTW: Thanks for contributing to "the cause".

awesome. i remember when you found the board back in the day. it took awhile for them to dump it, probably becasue of the epoxy block,  but good things come to those that wait.  :) thanks for finding the artifact and taking the time to risk shipping it across the globe.

I also have an undumped PCB. Dark Horse: World Derby Championship.

I'll dump it myself though, It just has normal eproms. I can by my own reader for not much more than round trip shipping to one of the dumpers.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

woodpecker screenshot. its cool to think all the work that went into having this ultra rare game in mame. the gameplay is similar to Naughty Mouse.

I got a message from Guru when I asked him about the possibility of getting the old PCB working again:

"Did you see the pics on my site of the protection module? it's now in a million pieces. the sockets on the PCB are configured for 2716 ROMs, but the module holds 2732 ROMs. The PCB will need to be modified, but I have neither the knowledge or time to do that."

I'd really like to get the PCB working.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

If your board is like the naughty mouse board you will need to burn 2532 roms with the eprom data, not 2732.  The first eprom will be ok but the others will require jumper wires from each eproms enables to the 74139  that does the addressing.  You will need to rewire the inputs of the 139 to access upper memory. iirc there's an input for refresh that gets cut and replace by a15 from the cpu.   It's the same general procedure for converting a  pacman to a ms pacman, you can probably find the instructions on the net.
