Space Invader design on workshop floor poll.
« on: November 10, 2004, 05:35:14 pm »
I'm nearing completion a garage that will be used exclusively as a workshop. Once finished it will be the space I use to complete my agravatingly delayed Mission Control project. I want to cover the cement slab floor with a more workshop friendly composite tile/linoleum type floor.. the kind you see in the grocery store. Since it is comprised of square composite "tiles" it would be easy to incorporate a space invader in the center.

Should I do it?

We don't need to park a car in it.

If we ever sell, I think I can swap out the colored tiles to create a normal floor.

It looks nice, but why didn't you make the design symmetrical? Or is this how a space invader looks?

Well, the picture isn't loading for me, dunno if you're in the process of updating the pic or what, so this is based on me not seeing your example.

make sure you can easily remove the adhesive/mastic/mortar you need to adhere the tiles to the floor.  If it's not easy, mebbe think about doing a WAY lighter design, perhaps an off white and the invader a light light grey if you really wanna do it.

I myself would do it  :P

Also, make sure you have standard sized tiles (12" or 4").

What about a laminated wood floor w/the invader being  darker color?  The lams will come in a pack, making it more likely that you'll not have to spend any money on extra materials to replace/cover the guy in case you need to.  It'll also let you put some insulation underneath which'll also act as a bit of cushioning.

OOO  OOOO OOOO MR KOTTER....OOOO

I just saw the pic, and thought of something else.  They make interlocking (think puzzle piece) floor mats to reduce fatigue that would make this

1 - WAY cool to do
2 - Easy to remove and take with you
3 - Easy to replace the guy if you want to leave it
4 - nice on the feet/legs/back
5 - give you whatever color combo they sell

Now you've REALLY gotta do it.

If anything I think this would increase the resale value of your home.

Not only do I think you should do it, but as I will be remodeling my gameroom in the next month or two I fully intend to steal your idea.  ;)  This is just indescribably cool!

Oh year, that would make a cool game room floor.

I think it's kind of cool. Many people might simply see a bad tile job, not a Space Invader, but it's your shop!

The thing is, will the invader be clearly visible, or will there be furniture, tools and things sitting on it. If it's obstructed that way, then I agree with the person who said it may just look like a bad tiling job (like you patched an area with whatever color you had available).
I dunno.

The nice thing about garages... no matter how good or bad they look, they don't really affect the price of the house. People expect crappy garages.

Way cool. What kind of tile?

Keep an extra box of the field color. If you sell the house, leave the tile box in sight. People will know they can replace the tile.

It won't decrease the value of the house anyway. The appraiser has a box called "tile." He either checks it or he doesn't. What things like that can do is make the house take longer to sell.

I don't think it would. But if you are really worried about it, just throw a carpet or a mat over it before showing.

WOW! Very cool. There is a mansion in Malibu that has a blue Pac Man ghost set in tile mosaic. Passed it on my commute for years before noticing it. I guess if it doesn't hurt the resale value of a mansion it shouldn't affect my little hovel too badly... of course it doesn't hurt that the mansion is on the beach, and errrr... a mansion.

I voted to go ahead and do it but now that I think about it I'm not too sure how distinctive it's going to be at the size it is... Kinda like how you can't see crop circles for what they are unless you're in a helicopter... :-\
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

That's a valid point, and the solution is to lay it out and look at it full scale first. If it's ceramic tile, then the color of the grout becomes important too.
