Control Hookup
« on: November 08, 2004, 05:46:21 pm »
Hi, i'm doing this for a school project (an awesome school project mind you) and I've spent a good few hours looking for exact instructions on how to hook up a keyboard to joysticks/buttons.  I know I'm gonna use eight buttons for each side and two joysticks.  I want to use a keyboard and most likely a keyboard encoder.  I've seen the encoder I want to use (KeyWiz) so any help is greatly appreciated.

If you're using a KeyWiz you don't need a keyboard (apart for setting things up of course).

I believe the standard KeyWiz uses screw terminals (all you need to do is strip the insulation off your wires, and screw in place).  The KeyWiz Eco requires some soldering but is cheaper...

Ok, even so, I still have no idea how i'm supposed to connect these things together and I have to know before I buy the parts because the school is paying for them and I need to purchase everything at one time.

Well even if you hooked up a wire wrong ... all you have to do is redefine the key in software in mame "Tab"

<------------- On the left side there is a big section on interfaces and wiring. Check it out, it helped me a LOT!

I already looked over there, it doesn't really tell me the exact things I need.  I guess i'll keep looking around.

Good luck.

Ok a specific question....
If I'm going to use the KeyWiz Encoder with two eight way joysticks, 16 buttons (eight per person), a one player start button, a two player start button, and a button for that blasted "Type OK" message (or if anyone knows how to bypass that with Xmame that would be delightful), what do I need?  Obviously I need the encoder and the hardware, but how do I connect the devices to the encoder?

move the joystick left then right (or edit the source to remove it entirely and recompile)
