Using mouse buttons as 1,2,3 on P1 Layout
« on: November 08, 2004, 12:40:29 pm »
I'm planning to use the mouse buttons as the 1,2,3 buttons on my 6 or 7 Player 1 layout.
Something like this...

      M1 M2 M3
       4   5    6

I want to do this to refrain from adding separate mouse buttons.
In this layout my M1 would most likely be my main "fire/action" button.

Do I have any reason to be concerned about doing this?
Will I have a problem with rapid fire, quick presses of the M1 button?
Or pressing multiple mouse buttons at the same time?
Or in combinations with other keystrokes?
I'll be using a KeyWiz.

In my tests.. I haven't found any problems.  But, some of you may have more experience with this.
Thanks,
JD

I think some people have had problems with simultaneous presses with mouse buttons.  I haven't had any problems but haven't used mouse buttons much...

Personally I wouldn't use them on the basis that all emulators (& FE's) can handle keypresses - few can handle mouse buttons...

As MinWah said, shouldn't be a problem for MAME, could be for other programs.
Will I have a problem with rapid fire, quick presses of the M1 button?
Not in MAME . . .

Or pressing multiple mouse buttons at the same time?
Not in MAME or that could be avoided by re-mapping controls in MAME, but I don't think even that would be required.

Or in combinations with other keystrokes?
Again, not in MAME

Ok, I assume you mean you will be using a KeyWiz for the other keys and a mouse hack for the buttons.  I.e., you do realize that the KeyWiz is only a keyboard emulator so you can't program it to send mouse button 1 on a keypress.  And an opti-pac only supports the left and right (no middle mouse button), so you would either need to use both inputs (Mouse 1 L, Mouse 1 R, Mouse 2 L) or a mouse hack.

Correct, the mouse buttons will be direct to the pc (mouse hack).
Hmmm....  I wasn't thinking about other emulators as I mostly use Mame & MameWah right now.
But, I did plan to get into the other emulators and I can see where the mouse buttons may not (or will not) work as they would in Mame.
I'll have to re-think this and figure out where to put mouse buttons now.
Thanks for the help.  Any other comments are appreciated.
