Old vinyl Issues
« on: November 04, 2004, 06:33:54 pm »
Hi all, I tried to remove the old vinyl on the sides from my cab, but it seems to be somewhat crispy. I did the blower thing to heat it up, but no luck. Has some one tried to remove vinyl that

You're doing the right thing, but you'll just have to work slowly.  Heat the vinyl until it starts becoming maleable, then start peeling it off bit by bit.  It'll likely take a while.

Belt sander and a fairly coarse belt. Also a wire brush to keep the vinyl from clogging up the belt.

How will you be recovering the cab? If painting you'll need a fine grit belt to remove any deep scratches left from the removal process.

Well the problem is that I'm using a Hair Dryer instead of a heat gun, so you recommend me get a heat gun or just heat a little longer with the hair dryer.

I'm removing this old vinyl to replace with some blue vinyl. And also i need to repair a few dents and a little water damage.

I had this very same problem. I wouldn't buy a heat gun to do this. If you have other needs of a heat gun, buy one it will go a little bit faster than the hair dryer. Even when it heats up and becomes pliable, it will still come off in sections / strips.

It may take several hours to do it this method, but it will likely save you from having to sand.

hmmm.. I see, so I'll give it another try.

Ohhh, a friend of mine told me that paint remover is ok for that, but I dunno if the particle board will handle paint remover.

I did remove the vinyl from my metal cp using paint remover applied with a brush and in small quantities it's usefull but kinda messy.

Do you think paint remover won't damage the particle board?
