IPAC4 and MAME controller setups
« on: November 03, 2004, 06:56:39 pm »
So I'm lazy, and before I get too into this, I thought I'd ask first. I've got a 4 player control panel, 6 buttons for player 1 & 2, 4 buttons for player 3 & 4. They're all hooked to my ipac and working, and now I'm configuring the inputs and mame.

Are there pre-made ipac4 or mame ctrl files? I ask because player 2 for instance has no mapping to buttons 5 and 6 in mame. Also in the default IPAC setup the letter I is mapped to two different buttons. Then MAME defaults to have diagonal inputs for player 1 (which eats up half the keyboard).

So my question is, do I just need to sit down and start configuring, or are there other ways to make my ipac and mame work more "harmoniously"? Thanks guys, you rule!

Nathan

Your best bet is to go and map everything out using the ipac utility, then translate those controls to mame using a ctrlr file.  You'll find that mame doesn't have P4 mapped as well so you need to do that.  It won't take you too long to set it up on the ipac - write down what mappings you have.

Here you can find instructions on setting up a ctrlr file.  Note that this is for the ini style ctrlr not the xml that is standard in mame now.  HowardC has an app to convert the file into the right format which you can get here.

thanks man, exactly what I was wondering about.

I hate asking questions that sound dumb, but if a search for it produces few results, then maybe the next time someone has the same question they'll find an answer easier.
