720 degrees HELP NEEED *********
« on: November 01, 2004, 06:07:28 pm »
Hello all,

I just picked up a 720 machine. The joystick works fine, it just takes more than normal effort to spin it. Like you can feel it working, almost a grinding feeling.

Is this a case of just requiring lube or is it something more sinister?

Thanks,
Craig

You'll have to disassemble the control to tell really.

Look HERE for info on what it SHOULD look like inside your controller.

The obvious answer is to look at it....

Turn it around and maybe you'll see it's full of junk, gunk or bunk. So a good cleaning would be in order.

Second reason for slow/hard to turn would be that a shaft, axle, pin etc is bent out of shape. That's tricky to fix, but the solution is of course to straighten it.

OooOOooh, I'm jealous!

Here are some pictures of particular note from my website.  They are how-to-assemble diagrams from the 720 arcade manual:

Note that my joystick is actually slightly different from the one in the picture.  Mine has no cylidrical notch in the joystick.  My theory is that people were breaking some of the joysticks at that notch, so the newer joysticks don't have one.  I have pictures to support that theory (from an ebay auction of spare 720 parts):

Very useful for the "OMG, I completely disassembled it, and don't have ANY idea how to put it back together again" crowd.

How about I just ship the joystick to you JerryJanis and you rebuild it to mint condition for me for a price?

Deal?

Your best bet is to take it apart yourself.  It's not a bad thing to figure out how to take it apart and put it back together.  That way if you ever need to clean it or fix it, you won't have to ship it out again.

I don't have any parts or equipment to rebuild it to mint condition, but if you still don't want to take it apart yourself and would rather send it to me I'd be happy to take a look at it and see if there's anything I could do.
