model 1 spinner knob question for Oscar
« on: September 17, 2002, 12:27:18 am »
Hey Oscar,
I was wondering if you would consider offering or know of any company that would have a clear translucent knob for your model 1 spinner. I currently have the black skirted knob with the brushed aluminum disc on top but I guess if I could find a knob a little bigger, it wouldn't need the skirt. With or without a skirt makes no difference to me as long as its clear plastic. I want to put a small blue led underneath the clear knob so that it glowes along with my lit up blue trackball.  I'd love to hear any ideas or maybe a optional clear knob as a new product from you ;) I'll be the first in line to buy. By the way, those ball top handles sound brilliant. I have 3  happ sticks on my cp but I ripped out my 4-way and replaced it with a Wico ball top because I hate bat shaped handles. If you do decide to offer those ball top shafts then I will also be buying two of those to replace the handles on my two 8-ways. Keep up the great products !

I have never seen a completely clear knob that would be suitable for a spinner, and I've probably done as much searching for spinner knobs as anyone.  One reason I can think of is because you would still have a collar and set screw(s) under the knob, and you would be able to see all that ugliness right through it.  It probably wouldn't look quite as attractive as you would like, especially if it were lit up.  I don't know, just a theory...

I also wanted this effect.  I will share the plan that I came up with, but as my cab is going slower than most (due to my inability to concentrate on anything other than alcohol during summer weekends) you may beat me to market!

I have kelsey's black skirted knob for a starting point.  I am going to cut a 'donut' out of 1/4 lucite and buff the edges up.  this will get mounted to the underside of the knob itself or perhaps I will bond it to the top of the cp (also covered) over the spinner mounting hole.  Then, when I mount the LED under the knob the light will be 'piped' out and around the ring.  Might need a couple of LED's to accomplish a uniform effect ('cause of the spinner shaft).

Now don't go usin my idea! (well not at least without a thankyou)

oh, and hi kelsey!

ps. I like the balltop idea, I originally wanted balltops but was unable to find any, then ultimarc came out with the j-stick, but only in red!  as my cab is all cool tones, the red was no good for me (black, blue, or purple would have been preferred).  Also the j-stick was listed as having a really long throw, I ended up buying the t-stik from andy which has a short throw and I really like it, but I still would prefer that balltop.

The sudden sight of me causes panic in the streets. They have yet to learn

Heh, and the ideas never stop...

I'll say one thing, you know the "mysterious new product" that I mentioned earlier this month...  You're getting warmer.   ;D

Which reminds me, I have to call that vendor again to find out what the heck ever happened to my prototype!

Come on... give me more credit than that!  This is exactly why I shouldn't say anything until I actually have it in my hands.   ;D

Oh, force feedback progress slowed down, having issues initializing ff.  But I'm getting closer.  Been busy doing more important changes to mame that suit my cabinet.  like being able to have a button6.ini file that remaps the buttons for fighter games.

Hey thats not a bad idea Elkor. I might just try that and your right as I will probably use three leds to disperse the glow more evenly. After all, what guy wouldn't like a see through skirt  :o  heh heh. Thanks for sharing.
