What could I use for microswitches instead of soldering
« on: October 27, 2004, 01:05:56 am »
I'd solder to the PCB of course, but to make less of a mess of things, what could I use to attach a wire to a microswitch connector without soldering to it? Like some kind of metal sleeve of some sort? Where I'd stick the wire in to one end/solder it to the sleeve and then stick it to the microswitch prong

You want quick-disconnects (female), most likely .187 size - check out the buy/sell/trade forum.

Um, you don't have to solder to microswitches at all. Just go down to the autoparts store and get some .187 quick disconnects. They have them with all the electrical stuff because car speakers use that size.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Here's another question
if I were to make a cheesy coin door for my Ms. Pac-Man cab, like just get the red slots or just paint them red lol and cut a slot for coins, could I probably construct something with the microswitch they use in real coin doors (with the long wire) where the coin falls onto a little shovel-like thing, throws the wire out of balance, pushing it down, activating the microswitch, gravity pushes the coin off and then back goes the wire up to it's normal position?

If using a I-PAC or KeyWiz, there are screw terminals, so no soldering to the PCB either.

No soldering to the sleeve unless you want to.  (They're crimp-on connectors).

All modern commercial arcade games use crimp-on quick disconnect female .187 (a.k.a. 3/16") terminals. This is exactly how how build (and repair) control panels is with quick disconnects.

Bob Roberts has a crimping tutorial on his website.

"If using a I-PAC or KeyWiz,"

What are these?
Remember I am using a Playstation 2 right now, not PC, if it's a PC-only thing.

Ooops, yep, my bad -

I-PAC - www.ultimarc.com
KeyWiz - www.groovygamegear.com

You will want one if you ever make it into a MAME machine.
