with or without topfire
« on: October 25, 2004, 06:11:27 pm »
I have been trying to decide what controls to put on my cp. I have pretty much decided on a slickstick co2 type layout. I just wonder how useful the topfires are. i'm thinking either one or none, but want some input.

Welcome to the forum.
It's pretty easy to decide really, how many games do you play or even know of that use a top fire joystick and how many that use 2?
You would probably get more use out of a rotary.

If you go modular, you won't have to make tough decisions like this one.  ;D

Seriously though, it depends on what you plan to play with it.
For games like Battlezone, not having a topfire would be a pain.
For games like Cloak and Dagger, it helps to have the fire button right there, but is not necessary.
For most other games, I prefer non-fire button joysticks (Wicos and T-stiks notably) for their feel.
I'm not really fond of the feel on the Happs joysticks.

battlezone and tron were the reasons I was thinking of having a topfire, but not sure if it's worth it for just 2 games (although very good games they are)

Assault is damn fun.

Which brings up a related question.  Do you need to have 4-way top-fires to play assault?  Also, is one topfire enough or do you need two?

Can't think of any reason to have 2...  That being said I plan on putting 2 on a cab just so they match eachother.  ;)
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

They need to be 4-ways, or 8-ways with restrictor plates.
It really doesn't like 8-ways.

I kind of regret putting a top-fire joystick on my control panel... only cuz I hardly ever use it.  I only really use it for Discs of Tron... should have got a top-fire button on my ball top instead, but I had already purchased the top-fire off E-bay for a good deal.  Or I think there's an Omni Stik 4-way/8-way switchable with the top-fire.  That would be awesome!

I really like Battlezone and Vindicators so top fires was a must.  The only reason you might want to use 2 is so both sticks have the same feel.  I use the top fires for other games like Crazy Climber and Robotron that don't require the buttons but work well with the sticks close together.

I thought Vindicators needed two 2-button top-fires for each player.  ???
