Weird Australian Joysticks
« on: October 24, 2004, 08:48:14 pm »
Check these out.  I was going through some of my old arcade stuff from back in High School and found these.  They appear to have a restrictor plate with them.  I don't have anything put together to test them out but they appear to have a very short throw to them.  Anyone try these out before?

They are MCA joysticks.  Probably the cheapest arcade stick you can get over here.  I find the throw HUGE, but then I am used to my T-Stick's.  The restrictor plate does work OK but they are nothing special.  They come in short for metal CP's like the ones you have and a longer version for installing under timber CP's.  The longer ones simply have a longer shaft with a spacer above the top plate.  I don't know if MCA is still around but then I haven't really looked too hard (a quick look in google found nothing at the time).

These seem to be in the vast majority of cabinets here in Australia, mainly in LAI machines from what I've noticed. I had them in mine until I replaced them with J-Stiks, mainly because they were very scuffed up.

The black ones are seen mostly in 80's cabinets and identical versions in blue, yellow, purple, green, red (I think) are found in 90's cabinets, most commonly streetfighter. I looked ages ago on the LAI site and seem to remember them bieng available for purchase there incredibly cheap.

Also, someone once told me the black ones are the hardest to get now. In use, they're a great retro stick and highly similar to the Suzo Eurostik, except the Eurostick has an annoyingly larger base which needs to be routed before mounting. I'd be interested to know which one was released first.

I would describe the throw as short indeed and say this stick is a great all round model, though it's definately easier to do SF moves on J-Stiks.

Yep, pretty darn common here. Maybe I'm just crap, but I never could pull off a dragon punch with one :) Something to do with the diagonals not being too crash hot I think...

These sticks are common as mud on Aussie Cabs!  Every old cabinet I've mamed so far has had these sticks on it.  I have about 5 of the sticks floating around somewhere.  I've never liked them personally.  Don't like the feel cos the ball is not quite big enough.  I also think they look uglier than a lot of the other joysticks you can get.
