Slow standby after XP reinstall (~45s)
« on: October 22, 2004, 08:25:36 pm »
This isn't really a big deal, as when I put my cab into standby, I'm generally leaving, but lately it's been taking a while.
I'm using XP pro, and using an alternate shell instead of explorer does not seem to affect it. When I hit the power button, the screen goes black almost instantly (but the cursor is still visible), and 20 seconds later, that disappears too. It takes another 20-25 seconds for the hard drives to finally spin down and everything to finally power off (using a smart strip).
Any suggestions? I'm not really sure where to start.

Try downloading security task manager ( free ) or purchasing Win Tasks 5 Pro and analyse what processes are actually running on your PC. It may be that you have processes running that are unneccesary and are hogging CPU.
Do you have long start up times when you shut down completely and reboot?

Installed security task manager, and only the bare minimum of services are running, and none are using anything more than about 1% of the cpu. My shutdown times are longish, but my startup times are pretty normal.

I guess you've run Adaware, Spybot etc and that you have run WinDoctor or something similar? Don't know if that will help.

Nope, turned off on all drives already. Good thought though.
