35" is WAY to low for a CP right?
« on: October 20, 2004, 12:08:27 pm »
In case you didn't know, I've been looking into depicting the Trogdor cabinet (from homestarrunner.com) as faithfully as posible and I've run into a little something that I think may be a problem.

Mahuti was awesome enough to convert the cab from swf to .ai.  From there I exported it to autocad and scaled it to aproximatly 70" (69.9963).  After that I started measuring... that's when I found out, that when scaled properly, the control panel on the cab would be at a height of aproximatly 35"!  The only cab I have to compare to at the moment is Defender and it's CP is 40"...  It doesn't seem like it's too much of a height difference but I thought I'd get some opinions.

As you can see in the picture everything looks pretty proportional.  I don't think I'd want to close up the monitor's space anymore than what it is now...  Let me know what you think.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

looks like the consensus is 38"
maybe it wouldnt hurt too much to scale it up 10%?  those homestar characters arent particularly proportionate anyhow.  you could also rig up some sort of sensor that get the machine to say "trogdor" when you kick it ;)

I think you should change the art to suit what a normal cabinet should be like. Cartoon are inherently full of exageration. I don't know if you should copy those artistic liberties.

Are you saying scale the whole cab up 10%?  That would make the height 77" or 6'5"!  Are there any cabs that are even that tall?  I'm not trying to critisize your suggestion, just going through the pros and cons...  ;)

I'm just saying make the base taller, and leave everything else proportional.

Just take a look at any of my plans on my website for control panel height examples.

I'm having some trouble using your site Jakobud.

Every time I click on an example (jpg in case you were wondering) it sends me to a blank page except for the top, it still says "mame cab - cabinet plans - contact me"

Battlezone is about 6'5", nothing much else is over 6'.

And yes that is way too low, I had a machine with a panel that was a couple inches taller than that, and you had to bend over to play it.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Yeah 38" sounds right.  Mine is around there (38 1/2") and it feels just right.  I did have to put it up on custom made palette to get it to that height though.  It would be very cool to get Trogdor on the Mame cab for some burnination!

Anyone finish Peasant's Quest yet?
